How can we do the most good with our careers?: Using evidence and reason to maximise our lifetime impact

The latest talk in our Key Causes series!

All up, we have around 80,000 hours in our career. That hair-raising figure breaks down to around 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, for 40 years.
Some argue that this fact alone makes your choice of career the most important ethical decision that you will ever make. This argument is based on the premise that unless you stand to inherit an impressively large fortune, the time you spend working is likely to be the most valuable resource you will ever have for helping others.

Despite this imposing fact, much of the existing career advice does not attempt to compare paths in terms of their relative impact, nor is it rooted in evidence, with “follow your passion” becoming an overly familiar and frustratingly empty maxim for those of us who have spent any time trying to develop a carefully reasoned career plan.
In this 60-minute workshop/talk, members of the EAA Committee will walk you through the nearly 10-years of research that has come out of the Effective Altruism community on how to plan for the most impactful career possible.

Key questions we will answer:
What does it mean to make a difference, and how can we know what helps?
Which global problems are most pressing?
Which solutions are most effective?
Which careers will give you the most leverage?
Which jobs will you be good at?
How can you best invest in your skills?
What does a satisfying job look like?
What strategy should you take to pursue a great career?
There will be an opportunity after the talk for attendees to ask facilitators questions and to mingle with other attendees.

There will also be a chance to sign-up for 1-1 advice sessions with the committee, to be realised at a later date.

Looking forward to meeting with you,

~ The EAA Committee.
