Dear all,

My name is Arturo Macias. I am a 45 years old economist working at Banco de España, the Spanish Central Bank. I have recently finished my Ph.D (see my ORCID account for my published papers: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1623-0957) and consequently I have recovered a substantial amount of free time. 

While I have a great deal of simpathy to the whole Effective Altruism movement my main interest is related to intitutional desing and economic estabilization.  In my view among the main existential risk bottlenecks for this Dangerous Century, a critical one is institutional stagnation. E.O Wilson famously said: "The real problem of humanity is the following: we have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology". Regarding the Paleolithic emotions, I can not advance any solution (this is for geneticists), and regarding the godlike tecnologhy, after Aug 6th 1945 nobody can. 

Regarding the medieval institutions I think I can make some modest contributions  and thats is why I am here.

Hello!
I posted this in a short form, but I guess it's also good to post it here.

I am a startup founder. My company is starting to work well by itself - I have about one full free day per week. My skills are team building, start-up building, remote team building, and software development.

How can I help? Is there a list of open projects that one could take on?  🤔

And for a bit of background, I came upon EA a couple of months ago and found it very meaningful. I attended my first meetup last week and also start the Giving What We Can pledge in September.

Hi Fabien, I used a method by Dr David Hanscom to cure chronic pain and it worked (spectacularly) for me and several other people. I would like to run a trial to see if I can get some solid data on whether something we don't fully understand could nevertheless help millions of people with severe, long term pain. No "boosterism",  I'm not going into this to "prove" it works but to find out. If you've got free time, I would love to have you onboard- I need to contact pain groups and influential people who can help, such as Scott Alexander, Julie Rehmeyer,  Andreas Gobel, Isobel Whitcomb, Julia Wilde, Nick Whitaker etc, and basically form an online team to work together on this project- with someone like Andrew Gilman to advise on methodology. I would then need to run the experiment and collate the results- the method is completely free, takes 5 minutes and sounds completely wacky. But, if you're here, I assume you're a Feynman fan- https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/W9rJv26sxs4g2B9bL/transcript-richard-feynman-on-why-questions  If we look at Ignaz Semmelweiss https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignaz_Semmelweis we can see that not all ideas are treated equally. If you're (understandably) sceptical, please find someone  you know with chronic pain and ask them if they've got 5 minutes to help you decide what path to go down. If it works for them, please tell me- also if it doesn't.

I don't want to imply that this must be a barrier to action, but how much time have you spent digging in to questions relevant to cause prioritization? Your priorities might change as you investigate more. I'm Rob, new around here. 

I read Doing Good Better a few years ago, got interested in EA and started channeling >50% of my charity donations through EA. But wasn't very active in the EA community. This year I decided to take the EA online intro course. And with the course - plus all the reading and podcasts around it - I've been gravitationally sucked into the EA universe (in a good way).

My specific intention right now is to work on Improving Institutional Decision-Making as that is pretty close to what I do for living at the moment.

My background is in psychology (undergrad) & then marketing (17 years professional career) & now coaching leadership teams (inc. around their strategy and key decisions).

If anyone is based in Australia and especially Sydney, let me know - I have checked out EA Sydney on facebook and meetup and haven't seen many upcoming events.

Hello everyone.

I have been following the 80000hours podcast and Peter Singers work for years. So naturally I had considered creating an account here as well, but what ultimately pushed me over the edge was that I wanted to point out a typo xD

My philosophy can mostly be described as utilitarian to the extent that this doesn't interfere with truthfulness, which fits well with EA to a point (I also value certain virtues and principles, but that shouldn't be too relevant). Welcome to the EA forum Aithir. :) I want to learn more about truthfulness, but a quick google search stranded into meaningless. Can you please recommend something to learn more about this principle and why you think it is more important than the concerns about spreading potential harmful information?

I am afraid I don't have a good answer to that. I just find it insufferable when people try to surpress (by the speaker believed to be) true statements for any reasons. My thought process is just that the consequences of a true statement don't change that it is true and so you get to say that it is true. This just feels very natural to me. To psychoanalyze myself a bit, I score relatively high (33/50 - indicting significant Autistic traits) on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient Test and exceptionally low (0th percentile) on the aspect Compassion of OCEAN Agreeableness.  I think the degree to which you can argue yourself into a different ethical position is limited by your psychological predispositions. People more empathetic than me ironically might just not be able to relate to my position.

Hey Y'all, I'm Mar! I'm an undergraduate student studying Arts and Humanities with a focus in community engagement and a minor in Sustainable Natural Resource Recreation Management.

Learning about EA was entirely a coincidence. I started seeing more and more recommended tweets that interested and/or inspired me. I like the emphasis on reason and rationality, the acceptance of people of diverse world views, and that everyone seems genuinely kind. I followed more accounts, and saw "EA" in many of the bios. I had literally no idea what that meant, and didn't think much about it until I noticed the majority of people I followed were identifying as Effective Altruists. I started to read more about it, and I like many of the ideas and values. 

I feel lucky to have found EA. I've been frustrated with my college and degree path. I'm in a small liberal arts program that produces and encourages unrealistic, unproductive, echo-chamber ideas and culture. Some examples are: a non-acceptance of political or economic ideas other than communism or socialism, valuing identity politics over factual information, none of my community engagement classes involving doing community engagement,  an... Welcome to the forum! I don't know where you go to college, but UMich appears to have an active EA group. Often local connections are helpful. One idea: if you are interested in research, Lizka (who manages the forum and worked with me last year in a research fellowship) wrote up a list of humanities research ideas for longtermists. More generally, doing good effectively is hard, and can be scary sometimes. None of us have all or most of the right answers, even if we use big words and fancy numbers and sound confident about specific subclaims. We're all in this difficult, potentially arduous journey of trying to figure out how to do the most good. There's no guarantee that we'll figure it all out, but we just have to give it our best shot, and approach these questions with curiosity, and dedication, and careful thought.

Welcome to the forum! I think your concerns are definitely valid. EA has very much a quantitative, numbers-focused bent to it, and that tends to attract a lot of men, which probably goes a long way towards explaining the demographics. (EA is around 70% male, according to the 2020 survey) For instance, computer science is ~80% male, and is also a very common degree path among EA's. So you're definitely right both that men are more common, and that there's a strong emphasis on scientific ability and intelligence in EA. That said, as you mentioned, one of EA's greatest strengths is that they're open to other ways of viewing things, so having a different view can sometimes be a good thing. It's tough in some ways, since you might not want to follow the same path as other EA's and it might be harder to find a niche. However, there's diminishing returns to even highly-valuable skill sets, so having a rarer skill set is often a good thing, since less people can do what you can do.  To use some made up numbers (because EA's love numbers :P) if EA values computer science 10x more than liberal arts, but there's 20x more computer scientists in EA than liberal arts majors, a liberal arts skillset could be twice as valuable as a computer science one.

Kudos to you for caring and wanting to contribute! Regarding your vision to contribute from the fields of art and humanities, I can tell you my personal thought on the matter - which only represents me, but maybe you will identify with it: with the progress of human knowledge and technology, the possibility of human society (and of every detail in it) to change the world is growing at an exponential rate. This means that the most effective thing that can be done today for the sake of the future, is to pass on to future generations the desire to improve the world. Every effort we make to improve the world will translate into greater impact if we invest it in preserving the ideology. For example, if each generation invests 95% of its effort in spreading the ideology (of EA and related ideologies) to future generations, and 5% in searching for solutions with the tools we have today (the 5% can be seen as a kind of "dividends" from the investment of preserving the ideology), I believe That the future will be much better than if we put most of our efforts into finding solutions right now. Fortunately for you, the humanities and arts can contribute greatly to efforts to preserve and propagate ideologies. But this is not a simple task at all! For it to be effective, the messages themselves need to be relevant for the long term - more conceptual and less specific (for example, probably environmental advice that is important will not be relevant in 100, 200 or 5,000 years; but the understanding that all animals deserve rights will be relevant in the future as well). In addition, the task of transferring ideas to the distant future is very difficult in itself. But it is possible: it has happened with a number of philosophical ideas, social and political ideas and religions. I believe this could be a direction for what you are looking for.   Good luck!

Sociology major from a small liberal arts college here, and resonate with a lot of what you're saying. In my case, I have a good fit with community building and operations-type roles, and now product management also. I wrote my undergrad thesis on social movements, which was partially influenced by EA and I think helped me think more systematically about movement building. I think figuring out ways to explore areas you are particularly interested in through classes could be really interesting (one of the benefits of liberal arts is flexibility on coursework and essays!)

One of my friends is interested in learning more about EA and I am trying to find good resources to recommend to her. The thing is, her English is only so-so; her preferred language is Spanish. I found a couple websites that give brief overviews of some EA ideas, but I am having a hard time finding comprehensive EA texts in Spanish.

Does anyone know of any EA resources in Spanish that could be helpful?

The prospect of Russia's grotesque invasion of Ukraine leading the use of beyond conventional weapons has produced anxiety in the past. I don't think this anxiety is justified.

Recently, there's been media reports suggesting the possibility of this escalation again, after sham claims of annexing Ukraine territory. 

Despite these media reports, the risk of this escalation is low. The report here from the "ISW" points this out, with detailed considerations.

Hi everyone, 

In this recent critique of EA, Erik Hoel claims that EA is sympathetic towards letting AGI develop because of the potential for billions of happy AIs (~35 mins) . He claims that this influences EA funding to go more towards alignment rather than trying to prevent/delay AGI (such as through regulation). 

Is this true, or is it a misrepresentation of why EA funding goes towards alignment? For example, perhaps it is because EAs think AGI is inevitable or it is too difficult to delay/prevent?

I can't speak for the donors, but only trying to prevent AGI doesn't seem like a good plan. We don't know what's required for AGI. It might be easy, so robustly preventing it would likely have a lot of collateral damage (to narrow AI and computing in general). Doing some alignment research is nowhere near as costly, and aligned AI could be useful.

While I am also worried by Will MacAskill's view as cited by Erik Hoel in the podcast, I think that Erik Hoel does not really give evidence for his claim that "this influences EA funding to go more towards alignment rather than trying to prevent/delay AGI (such as through regulation)".

Hi all! I'm a 40 year old mom who just (re)discovered 80,000 Hours, and through it this forum. I am look at a career change (though I don't know if I really have had a "career" up to this point), and I have the luxury of taking some time to figure out where I could be most useful and enjoy what I'm working on.

I really like the concept of using my time/skills/money to do the most good, though I find that (I think like many people), I place slightly different value on some parts of EA vs. some of the introductory posts I have read. So far, I am interested in social justice issues, promoting/preserving democracy, what future government might look like, and the general preservation of human life through access to preventative medicine and stable food and water supply.

I have background/some skills in many areas, including electronics repair and manufacturing, inventory management, web design, copy writing, video editing, photography and photo editing, box office/front-of-house, retail customer service, shipping coordination, planning and facilitating children's programming. I don't really see how this might get me a job at a very EA-centric company, but who knows.

For now my goal is to learn and connect, so if you have any recommendations for things I should read or just want to say hi, please send me a message.

Welcome Danielle, nice to see you here! The EA movement can help you with your career choices. I really recomment getting in touch with a group either local or virtual. If you want to learn more about EA, a Fellowship is a good way to learn together and share your different views and arguments or if you want to learn more which career would be a good fit for you book an 1o1 with someone. Don't be shy to hit on people and write them if you have an idea or a question. The community is here for you. :) PS: Reading recommendation time. I belive in you can only give a book away as a present which you have read yourself, so I will recommend you Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind : Harari, Yuval Noah. The title gives its premise away but it really helped me to extent my view on our species and the timescales we are dealing with (important for longtermism and our own historical perspective). I recommend it partially because I just finished Homo Deus from the same author and it makes a good addition to the first book. Hi, Folks! I'm Wahhab Baldwin, a 78-year-old retired software developer and manager and minister. I have donated at least 10% of my income for decades, strongly favoring effectiveness. I ran into EA through the Podcast interview with William MacAskill on "People I (Mostly) Admire." 

I strongly affirm much of EA, but I disagree with certain elements, and hope I am able to have some enlightening conversations here. I hope tomorrow to write a post on longtermism. As a preview, I will argue that we must discount a future good compared to a present good. It is better to save a life this year than to save a life next year. If we discount at the conservative rate of 2% per year, then a life 1000 years from now should be valued at 1/600,000,000 of a life today, meaning (imo) that we should really focus only on the next century. This idea is known in the community but I am looking forward for your post and the discussion beneath it. :) Also big kudos to donating based on effectiveness over the past decades (and donating at all). I think this could also deserve a post, on your history of figuring out which donation is effective and how you choose between them.

Hi everyone, there are animal rights groups working to introduce new ballot measures in the US in California and Oregon that could help animals in a significant way. In California, we are working to introduce a ballot initiative that will probably be a ban on new animal factory farms in all of California. We are having several possibilities tested by Faunalytics. Hi everyone! I have a question for moral philosophers here! People in animal advocacy sometimes debate about some type of "contrary to duty imperatives" in which an advocate makes a demand that might "countenance" some constraint violation. For example: "Please do not consume any animal products, but if you are going to eat some at all, at least leave fish, chicken and eggs off your plates" or "Stop using cage-eggs".  I found it surprisingly difficult to find academic discussion around the morality of uttering these sentences, so if you are aware of anything useful, please share!

Hello, although I am not a philosopher, I know and read philosophy, and I hope I can answer your question. (In addition, I am new to the forum - this is my first response - so I apologize if I deviated from the norms or if I misunderstood the conversation).   I believe that the logic behind such sentences is a utilitarian view (Philosophy of Jeremy Bentham): "a little damage" is better than "complete damage". However, even with utilitarian considerations we must consider possible consequences of specific actions. For example: Is it possible that following a statement like this that you demonstrated, a third party will see and be legitimized to cause "little damage" instead of "zero damage"? Or, is it possible that the listener will thus be able to deal better with the conscience, and this will delay his future transition to "zero harm"? On the other hand, it is possible that without sentences like these, the listener will be silenced and will not be willing to think about the subject at all, and thanks to the gradual transition, he will be able to make a big change, which is difficult to make at once.   These considerations move the discussion from philosophy to psychology and cognition. I believe that scientific articles on cognitive dissonance, intuitive morality, and autosuggestion would be useful here

Is there a good resource on moral views? I'm reading moral uncertainty at the moment, and Will touches on utilitarianism, consequentialism, etc. I thought to myself that it would be helpful to find a resource that lists most mainstream views and maybe help people navigate through them to understand them better and add credence to them. I could not find such a website. 

 

If anyone can point me to a good resource that can help me better understand these moral views, that would be awesome. Merci!

As Ukrainian woman who was forced to leave the country with two kids, I wonder how I can help Ukrainians to donate more efficiently. Ukrainians become more and more conscious and altruistic nation, but I am sure that most volunteers and donors are not efficient enough. I appreciate any information links on this cause. Thank you.

Hi everyone.
I'm Riccardo working on a mobile game with a group of activists.

I decided to look into the EA forums again after listening to an interview with Will MacAskill on Ali Abdaal's YouTube channel, if you haven't seen it, it's one of the best interviews I have seen with Will.

I checked out the forums years ago, so I thought I'd give it another try and look a bit through the most popular posts and see what people here are up to.

Hello, I'm a french citizen living in Bourges, France. I own a bachelor in wildlife conservation. I learned about EA through my personal curiosity about artificial intelligence and I also was wondering how to help biodiversity on the long term. Hi all,

I am new to the forum, but not new to the ideas behind EA. I read Will's book back in 2015 when I met him in the US, and have been inspired to do the most good with my career. I have lurked on the forum for a while, but would like to meet more in the community so finally introducing myself. :)

I saw an estimate of I believe from the Gated City book that suboptimal land use policies in the US cost in the neighborhood of ~2% of GDP. So very high!

Hi folks,

newcomer here.

I am looking for advice on what to do when i have -finally, at long last- finished my masters degree in bioprocess engineering at a major university in southern germany (KIT, Karlsruhe).

There is a lot of cool research going on here and staying at my cozy environment, working on a doctorate degree seems tempting. But staying in academia until i am fourty (which isn't too long anymore) could hamper my ability to find a job later.

As a brand new newcomer to EA, only a day or two, my fairly ignorant first impression is to wonder whether EA culture is too intellectual.  

It could be argued that the most successful effective altruism effort in the history of Western civilization has been Christianity.  (FYI, I'm not Christian)  As example, in the United States Catholic Charities is the second leading provider of services to the needy, topped only by the federal government.   And that's not counting the very many Protestant charity projects.

Hi and welcome to the community! I have a few rambly thoughts :D As far as I know, focusing on exposing potential high-achievers to EA has been both a consequence of EA history (EA comes from academia), and explicit strategy (high-potential people would probably have more impact, so it makes sense to focus on them). This means that the community inherits a lot of norms from academia. But I feel like there's a lot of room for the broader version of EA that's palatable for broader society. Giving what we can is best positioned to do this, but I think the main points to spread outside the core community are roughly: 1. If you donate, be thoughtful about where you donate, some orgs have much more impact than others. 2. You should care a little bit about all of humanity. I think Christian charities seem really trustworthy, since everyone knows Christianity is serious about compassion.

Thank you for the welcome, and your rambly thoughts.  :-) Yea, that makes sense.  Rome wasn't built in a day as the saying goes, and EA had to start somewhere, and it's good that it did.   Sadly, some ancient institutions such as the Catholic Church seem to have become expert at demolishing their own moral authority, so it's good that other means of reaching towards the same charitable goals are being established.    I like it that EA appears to be ( a first impression) nether religious or secular, and instead just charitable.    All that said, it seems it would be wise for EA activists to keep in mind that the Catholic Church is, in spite of all it's troubles, still truly massive, global, and very well established in the third world where so much of the need exists.   If a partnership is not already being explored, there might be an opportunity there.

Hi all!  My name's Tom. I'm an A level student in the UK, currently studying Politics, Philosophy and Environmental Science. My main forays into the world of altruism include volunteering at Oxfam for a period and donating to the odd charity here or there. Admittedly though, Oxfam isn't a very effectively targeted organisation, and the charities I have previously donated to have been more based on superficial measures such as my respect for people who endorse them or have been motivated by disaster responses.

The issue I'm most concerned about is Climate Change, which I notice doesn't seem to be as big an issue for many members of the EA community. My subject A level choices were largely influenced by my aspirations to help tackle Climate Change, and ideally I'd like to move into an effective career in this area ASAP. However, some of the stuff I've read in the EA community, particularly some of the advice of 80000hours.org has made me contemplate this plan, but I think it is something I'll have to contemplate further.

I dont know if 80k works with career advisers in educational institutions, but I know that they will answer your question fast and in detail if you write them directly: https://80000hours.org/about/contact-us/ Doing good better is published in 2015. Carbon capture and sequestration is still future tech and does not resolve the problem with rising climate gases. Simon Clark did a video on this topic lately, condemning the tech: Have a look into the IPCC report and look for yourself: https://report.ipcc.ch/ar6wg3/pdf/IPCC_AR6_WGIII_SummaryForPolicymakers.pdf  Why not just donate to the best cause? The best cause is specific to you. It is good practice to splitt your donations on different cause areas, since you have different interests and want to improve the world in different areas. If everyone would be like a perfect robot and is only donating to the best cause at the time every donation would go to them, thus making everyone else neglected which would make them the best cause in return. You don't have to donate strictly to one cause area, feel free to decide in which area you want to have an impact and then search where you could make the biggest impact. Nice to see that you have read quite some EA literature and that you are working together with your students to make the world a better place. The saying goes in the education for Sustainable Development:"think globally, act locally."

After reading too much Peter Singer, I donated a kidney and am involved in the Give A Kidney charity, which promotes non-directed (aka "altruistic") kidney donation.

None of this is effective as cataract operations, of course.

Are any of the more philosophically incline EA's into the pragmatic school? There's obviously a (very!) strong consequentialist strain here though I could see engaging with pragmatists like Dewey, Rorty and others to be super helpful to this movement.

Have any prominent EA philosophers engaged with critiques of consequentialism? Are there canoncial examples of those that people might point to? I don't really have a desire to write a several thousand word essay though would be curious what more philosophically inclined EA's think of works like "Beyond Consequentialism" by my old prof Paul Hurley. You might be interested in this thing from within the EA community which I think might be one of the deepest possible cuts against consequentialism: Logical Decision Theory (or any solution to newcomb's problem), but afaik, no one's written about this angle on it, because it's pretty arguable that it's just advocating for a different kind of consequentialism. But I don't totally buy those arguments: LDT advocates doing things that will have bad outcomes, when being the kind of person (or the kind of decision theory) who would do those things gets it better outcomes on average across all possible worlds. In human-level application, this ends up looking a bit more like advanced virtue ethics than consequentialism, to me. On the other hand, I've seen it argued that regular consequentialism ends up looking like virtue ethics too.

Hi! My name is Liza Munk, and I found out about EA through an ad on the podcast, Dear Hank and John. I'm working on making a career pivot away from academia but not yet had luck finding a new job, so I found it really refreshing to stumble upon a more optimistic message about my ability to find a high impact career. My MA and PhD are in ethnomusicology, the cultural anthropology of music, and I did my research as a Fulbright Fellow in Amman Jordan. It was never boring! But I grew increasingly frustrated with academia and am so looking forward to finding work that is collaborative at its core, respectful of work-life boundaries, economically secure, and remote (if not local) so that I can stay close to my family. I have a lot more reading, thinking, and brainstorming to do before I can narrow down which high impact area(s) exactly I'm most passionate about, but I can tell you how nice it was to hear a reference to cultural anthro on the podcast - having a high impact on the Ebola epidemic. Reflecting a bit on the EA call for criticisms, one obvious challenge to the movement is cities like San Francisco. That's a city with tons of EA aligned folks and yet spending a lot of philanthropic dollars to alleviate hunger in Africa or address AGI risk in the future while there's massive human immiseration all around the city just seems extremely dystopian. Say more about why it feels dystopian? Totally agree that the situation in SF is bad. but it feels good to me that EA aligned people see how much worse it is in other places, and don't prioritize what's near to them over where the most suffering is.

Would it be altruistic to walk past a person dying in the streets so you can close an extra deal, make an extra buck and send that to a far away place to help a few more people? That seems rather cold and calculating and not in a good way.    There definitely are people suffering to a high degree in SF btw. The homeless situation is quite dire.

It similar doesn't seem altruistic to help people on the streets close to you and ignore poor people in a different country just because they are far away. No situation short of "help everybody" really sounds appealing. Short of solving all problems in the world, prioritizing problems is necessary. What's wrong with prioritizing problems based on where the most suffering is?

Hey all! 😊

My intuition leads me to think that focusing on improving life quality and eradicating poverty in all forms (not just extreme) would be highly impactful. This is because lifting more people out of poverty means that they have more free time to pursue self actualization, and therefore more likely to pursue EA and an impactful career. It's essentially the idea behind egoistic altruism (cute video below).

Welcome! And thanks for posting this. I agree that it's valuable to recognize the downstream impact that making the world a better place can have on your own livelihood. However, the feedback cycle is likely to be decades or longer, and might be hard to use as motivation on a daily basis. In my experience it's valuable to have more immediate motivators, such as the welfare you might be creating directly with a job focused on making the world a better place, the team you might be working with, or a passion for the technology or product you are working on itself. Technology is surely a mechanism for reducing poverty (think of the industrial revolution, green revolution, vaccines and drugs). However, a large chunk of our technological output also goes towards marginal quality of life improvements for the already-rich.

Im curious, why do you think EA has not taken off into the main stream ? Rationally it should be the #1 charitable cause in the world but its not. Why do you think this is ?

I'm director of learning for a French ed tech startup focused on evidence-based learning.

I believe I found out about effective altruism proper from Vox around 2015. Had also gone down the existential risk rabbit hole around 2013-2014 while a student but did not make the connection between those issues at the time.

Are we already past the precipice? Would we know if that was the case? I really wonder. Things seem to be spiraling. Many of todays conditions mirror the malaise and misery of the 1930s but the capacity for destruction is orders of magnitude higher. I wonder if we need to act with much greater urgency and boldness to be more proactive about XR.....

Has anyone fully dug into the AI credulity risk? By that I mean the XR scenario where a technology A) believes they've invented AGI and B) acts on the belief in Ozymandian fashion. Note A does not require actually inventing AGI. It just requires that like the recent Google employee that they believe it to be so. And note B does not require that they actually have evil intent. I am a young electrical engineer, childfree, in Wisconsin. I'm plant based at home; try to eat vegan when going out to eat, but usually end up eating vegetarian. Excited to see the result - think this is a great contribution to the community. I suspect that a lot of us are heading into longtermist work (ex: xrisk reduction) without proper psychological footing and that more support in the movement would go a long way towards reducing burnout...good luck, Bary!

Hi Bary! While my chronic condition isn't a mental illness, it still dictates what most of my engagement with EA can look like. I'm really glad to see comments and projects like yours, and I'd like to encourage others in EA to feel safe to talk about their illnesses and disabilities.

Hello everyone, I am a new forum member. 

I am 29, live in Geelong, Australia and discovered the EA community through reading LessWrong a few years ago. I have paid attention to it since then, as well as read some of the canonical books and set up a regular automated donation. With this considered, I have since realised I should be more proactive in reaching out and connecting with people. Especially as I am currently going through a transitional phase in my career.

Originally I completed a bachelor's and master's in exercise science and worked within the strength and conditioning industry from the age of about 21-27. After that, I worked in the mental health industry for 12 months and now work in government. This transition came about during COVID-19  after I took the plunge of learning to code. I loved the challenge and after gaining some basic skills, I decided to re-enrol at university for an undergraduate in artificial intelligence. 

From about 24 onwards I had fantasised about changing careers and working in a space that was more pressing and impactful -- particularly AI alignment -- but felt I had already chosen my path and had to stick with it. (How naive of me!... (read more)

Hi! New here. I had a question about donations and the processing fees. Is there a specific rate or fee that Stripe charges for credit/debit donations? I'm trying to gauge which route to go given the fee structure + admin overhead. 

I believe I read somewhere that manual transfers + wires have more admin overhead such that they may only be beneficial if the donation exceeds $1000.  Is that true? 

I believe my options to donate are only a Wire Transfer with my bank. It only offers Zelle, Bill Pay, and Wire Transfers. The wire transfer comes with a reasonably high fee. So I'm trying to assess which is more beneficial for the o

Hi Alex! Strip charges 2.9% + $0.03 for most debit or credit card payments (plus extra for currency exchange or international cards). Stripe also supports ACH (eCheck) payments, which all bank accounts support, with a fee of 0.8% or $5.00, whichever is less. If the organization's Stripe account already has ACH allowed, this should be no trouble for them. Givewell asks to receive donations under $1000 through card payment and over $1000 through check. However, not all charities are Givewell - some are happy to receive a check at $500, for instance. Lastly, don't forget to check to see if you can use a workplace charity matching program, as many of them cover credit card fees in addition to matching your donation.

Is there a way to search for sequences in this forum? There are some sequences that seem really good, like “Winners of the First Decade Review”, but I’m struggling to find sequences other than happening to find a post that’s part of a sequence, and then clicking on the sequence banner at the top. Any help would be great! :)

(Perhaps this has been talked about before, and I’d be grateful for being pointed in the right direction if so - though when I quickly searched just now, I wasn’t able to find an answer.)
