Love the birds! If you were able to include their bird calls or song, that might make your venture even better a place to maintain one's mental wellness amidst the job hunt.

Plus I think diverting all mental health funding to mandated bird call listening will really help with productivity gains /joking

Heya, Rick. To what extent would you say that the donor landscape of EA-associated individuals requires a different approach, from a fundraising perspective, to those outside EA? What tips might you have for an organization aiming to diversify outside the bubble?

And, frankly, the bullet-pointed questions in the lead-in are all of interest, especially (for me) common mistakes made by EA organizers, working with existing funders to find new ones, and the Beatles, of course. Whatever you have bandwidth for based on other questions. Many thanks!

Hi @Adam! Good to see you here. There are lot of things I think we can do better, though I'd add a caveat that my responses here are not generalisations. There are orgs which make a point of doing everything they can to engage donors (EA and non-EA), and there are others which fail to make the easiest of changes. So we talk about some of things I've experienced, I'd encourage other views and opinions, as well as examples from forum readers. 1. We may not know everything about our organisations, but having someone on the team who can talk to donors/funders is helpful. Emailing your URL, and reminding a prospective donor that you sent it, may not be sufficient. 2. Create ways to bring donors in. While your X post about your latest research may  interest a number of X readers or followers, what else might you be able to do to build an audience, and donor pool? Perhaps a webinar presenting key results? A Q&A with other experts in your field? Piggyback off of your existing activities to find ways to engage noew people, and keep your current people updated. 3. Make it easy for people to support you. Be contactable. Include your email address and LinkedIn link in your email signature. Let me know what time zone you're in. If you have a donation page or FAQ about your organisation, perhaps include a link or button so I can explore more.   As I mentioned, this is not an exhaustive list, and some of these are fairly minor points. But overall, I think the more we can a foster a broad mindset, the better we'll do at engaging with non-EA funder. It's not that we're hiding EA, it's that we're more than EA.  EA+ anyone?

FYI @André Kirschner I have a volunteer looking at translating into German now, though some parts have to wait until next school year's three presented charities are selected, which we hope will be by early June.

Hi, @André Kirschner. We are able to run the program in Germany, though it has not yet been translated into German. If you have thoughts about schools that might be interested, I might be able to dive into my contacts and find localization resources.

I enjoyed your piece (and adore the title—so atypical for the Forum; perhaps we need more like it). It makes me think about AI alignment and the question, "Can AI ever be truly in line with our values if it cannot feel empathy?" Which could be argued to translate to, "..if it cannot suffer?"

I was thinking more of how we submit fruit of all varieties to the ordeal of extremely gruelling (they must sit still for hours or days at a time) and potentially humiliating still lifes.

Would love to see a similar analysis for LinkedIn, for example. There are a decent list of groups, from 80K to GWWC, Founders Pledge to the project I work with, GWWC Charity Elections, that aim to target people as professionals, or in specific professions or professional contexts. It would be instructive to see what success EA has had engaging audiences through that platform, and how.

Great points! I appreciate your concern about the original ideas being aimed too much at the job title and not enough at the  individual, and your thoughts on downside risks are also well taken. I like where you take these ideas from a marketing standpoint, as well.

I have been encouraged by recent developments like the appointment of a head of communications at CEA, and hope ideas like those in my entry above—and improvements upon them, much as you have offered—will be considered increasingly in the coming months.

Thanks, Adam! And thank you for starting a conversation around this approach (I don't think I mentioned that in my original comment). I've actually applied to some of the new comms positions at CEA  and would love the opportunity to further explore these ideas and others...

Stories are powerful things. I know it is just anecdotal, but I would wager The Lorax and possibly other books (The Giving Tree comes to mind in this moment) boosted my interest in environmental protection. Though it may be I was already tending in that direction as a child and they just fit my sensibilities. I mean, I was also reading Konrad Lorenz pretty young...

Agreed stories are powerful, and the sentimental value can also remain strong over years.  If someone is thinking what book to give to a niece, or friend's kid, or their own kid in the future, they might think of those classics like The Giving Tree they resonated with years back...  (I'm imagining all those millions of young parents starting to read Harry Potter to their own kids now...)

Guy, do let me know if there is anything else I can answer to help you decide whether to recommend the program to your school. Thanks!   -Adam-

Greg G., our project lead, sent me this information: Last year, a high school with limited English skills ran the event. Here is a testimonial from the teacher. (She requested sponsorship to run another charity election this year. )

”It had been a fulfilling experience for my students, they have not only learned about not charities but also got a chance to practice their language skills which is incredible! What a great accomplishment!”

While we have not started a process of localization for the program, it is a goal to start in the next year. In the meantime, however, it seems the program shows some success with English language learners.

This is interesting, Adam. Thanks for sharing. I think you should consider posting this as a standalone piece on the forum, because I can imagine there will be a wide variety of opinions regarding the speed at which EA should grow. What I will say though is that I really like the idea of doing profiles on specific people — e.g.,  "How this software engineer approaches charity" — in order to relate to a wider audience. I think this is the exact kind of content we'd like to work with our members to produce, so thanks for sharing the idea!

Thanks for sharing - I just wanted to quickly reply to mention that I agree that you should post this as a full post because it probably won't get much attention here (which might also lead you to think it wasn't well received). As a very quick additional comment, I'd also look into the arguments for and against rapid movement growth, as I think that that debate is the main reason why EA as a movement isn't trying to grow especially rapidly.  I'll offer more thoughts  when I see your post!

Aaron, has a .pdf of the new edition been made available? Thanks!

That reminds me of a charity I was faux-promoting to friends in high school: Bookmarks for the Poor.

If you end up with a list of tools, you could add 'em to the chart I link to in the comment above. It's meant to collect just about everything important. If you'd like.

[This is my first real Forum post; please have pity, folks, 'specially if I spend time on something self-evident. :-)  ]

This is such an important post, and timely as new charities arising from EA turn ever more outwards to engage the public. Gidon, it’s like you’ve been IN MY BRAIN, because I have been pondering a number of these issues for months, as some of my EA contacts can attest. I appreciate how clearly you have explained the issues and your conclusions.

In a conversation to today with Jack Lewars at One for the World, I concurred with his obser... (read more)

This could lead to quite a bit of cost-effective positive impact on students, especially those who already have an interest in choosing a career that has positive social consequences. Many students, in my experience, would be very happy to consider higher-impact careers if they had a little wisely-presented encouragement at the right juncture. Such materials would not have to be extensive, and they could be tied to online content that goes deeper into the topic or even provides some interaction.

That said, the above OP call for proposals seems highly orient... (read more)
