Bio

I’ve spent most of my life working in hands-on fields like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, general contracting, and as a merchant mariner. Despite this, I’ve always had a passion for computer science. My journey started with QBasic back in high school, and while I stuck with it for longer than I’d like to admit, everything changed about seven years ago when I discovered Python and machine learning.

What began as tinkering for fun quickly became a deep passion for machine learning and AI. I love experimenting with electronics and playing with code, constantly exploring how things work and what I can build. Recently, I came across the alignment problem and found myself falling down the rabbit hole. I was struck by the enormity of the challenge and its implications for humanity’s future.

As a father of three, the alignment problem resonates deeply with me. I want my kids—and their kids—to have a future worth looking forward to. While I’ve always been aware of existential risks like climate change and supervolcanoes, this problem feels different. It’s a challenge we can tackle, and solving it could unlock solutions to so many other problems.

I may not be formally educated, and I’m just one small voice, but I believe every effort counts. I’m here to learn, contribute, and do what I can to help ensure a better future for all of us.

How others can help me

I’m here to learn, grow, and contribute in any way I can. If you share my concerns about AI alignment, I believe one of the solutions lies in raising awareness on a much larger scale.

Right now, the alignment problem is siloed within high-level academic discussions and altruistic organizations. The general public is largely unaware of its urgency and importance. But I believe that, with the right framing, we could change that. If everyday people truly understood what’s at stake, many would feel compelled to help.

What I’m envisioning is a targeted ad campaign designed to spread awareness of the alignment problem to the general public. The campaign would simplify the core message and make it accessible, engaging, and impactful. The goal wouldn’t be just to inform but to inspire action—whether that’s donating, organizing, or contributing skills.

I don’t have all the answers, and I’m not sure how to make this happen yet, but I believe this idea has potential. If you share this vision or have advice, I’d love to hear your thoughts. No contribution is too small—anyone can help.

How I can help others

I consider myself adaptable and capable in many areas, even though I lack the technical training and experience of an alignment expert. My background is in hands-on fields, and while I may not have formal qualifications, I’ve learned to approach problems with creativity, persistence, and practicality.

Despite my shortcomings, I’m deeply committed to contributing in any way I can. Whether that’s simplifying complex ideas for others, connecting people with resources, or learning new skills to be more effective, I’m ready to step up. I believe every effort counts, and I’m here to help move the needle, however small the step may seem.

If there’s a way I can assist or grow into a role that makes a difference, I’d be honored to try.
