It has been said that compassion is mandatory for human survival. How is compassion best utilized in effective altruism?

Cost-benefit analysis is often used to make decisions about whether or not to pursue a particular course of action. However, it can also be useful for determining whether or not to engage in altruistic pursuits. When considering whether or not to help others, we must weigh the costs (of our time, effort, and resources) against the benefits (the good that we can do). In some cases, the benefits will outweigh the costs and it will make sense to help. In other cases, the costs will be too high and we'll need to focus our efforts elsewhere. Ultimately, cost-benefit analysis can be a helpful tool for deciding how best to use our resources to make the world a better place.
