Reading this, I recognize myself a little. Only back then, I wasn't a journalist, but rather a "forum pragmatist" who only believed in things he could touch. In 2015, I would have also rolled my eyes at talk of an AI apocalypse and said something like, "Guys, let's focus on real problems—poverty, medicine, animals." Back then, it all sounded like typical futurism for futurism's sake.
But now, looking back, it's hard not to admit that those "strange" people made the most accurate bets. And it's not even that they guessed the specific details—it's that they weren't intimidated by the very idea that the world could change dramatically and nonlinearly. I, like the author, relied too much on the "if it was important, everyone would have already said so" approach, and that turned out to be a rather weak heuristic.
I believe that when intelligent people consistently and convincingly talk about something that sounds outlandish, it's not a reason to believe it, but it is a reason not to dismiss it. Especially when the stakes are potentially enormous.
