All of Swan 🔸's Comments + Replies

Thanks for writing this post! I am glad that the list of short-term projects is still useful!

This is a great overview!

It would be awesome to see a follow up post from yourself or someone else on the following:

- what are the centers currently working on AAV
- who is funding this work
- what are the gaps in research
- what are the gaps in funding

I would love to hear more thoughts on:
Future research must focus on:

  • Engineering novel AAV capsids to avoid immune recognition.
  • Developing larger-capacity variants or split-genome strategies.
  • Scaling up manufacturing for e

Thanks, Swan. My collaborator  at the University of Waterloo, is workinging on AAV vaccine platform design. Our model of collaboration is this, his lab is strong in design, he does all the engineering in Canada and sends to me here in Nigeria for testing. Funding has been a huge challenge.  At the moment We are evaluating Phage vaccine platforms too. Not many people fund this as well

It would be awesome if someone made an updated version of the biosecurity landscape map. Lmk if you are thinking of doing this.

I think this is cool! It shows gaps in capabilities so that people can see what needs to be worked on.

Thanks for writing this up! Have you considered condensing this into a two-page policy brief? I am sure this could also be useful as a template for other countries. Feel free to dm me.

Thanks Swan. I have thought about doing that although I haven't written a policy brief before. It seems like this model of screening airports would work best in island countries such as Australia, and I could probably adapt this report for that context. My greatest uncertainty is in the estimate for cost savings as this depends on predicting the frequency and severity of future pandemics. Do you have any feedback on this area?

This was super interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have more questions, will DM.

FYI rolling applications are back on for the Biosecurity Forecasting Group! We have started the pilot and are very excited about our first cohort! Don't want to apply but have ideas for questions? Submit them here (anyone can submit!).

Great! Excited to see the results (at least for the US!).

Thanks for putting this together. I found it interesting and useful for my calibration. Will there be a follow-up of a similar design in any other countries? Or another study like this in the US but in a year etc?

Thanks! Yes, we plan to repeat Pulse at least another three times in the US. We'd be interested to run it in other countries if there were interest in funding it.

Thank you both! What a great and concrete post. I enjoy seeing tractable, actionable and specific ideas. I hope there will be more posts like this!

I ranked the more neglected charities higher as they will benefit from funding more than others

What a great post! It's super useful and I will send this to them if people ask me for advice. Thank you.

Thanks for your post on quick ways to test suitability for bio work!

Hi!

We will update our website soon. We have two small scale projects that we are running in collaboration with the Oxford Biosecurity Group. You can check out projects #2 and #3 here

Let me know if this helps.

It will!

Hi! @Tessa might have time to write up the alternative model. I don't want to put pressure on them to do so. However, the only thing I can share is:

  • Hear about it
  • Learning to decide whether you're interested
  • Starting to generate your own ideas/opinions
  • Starting to contribute
  • Making contributions in a more defined area

Thank you! :)

I appreciate your feedback! Glad you found it helpful.

Hi! I am the "third" co-founder in this scenario. Happy to DM about why this particular choice was made and why it made sense for this team.

This is a great report! Adding it to my to-do list! If I have more questions how would you prefer me to contact you? Feel free to reply with a DM.

Glad it's relevant for you! For questions, I'd probably just stick them in the comments here, unless you think they won't be interesting to anyone but you, in which case DM me.

Could you link the prediction markets for this if you create them? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for this post! Very excited to have this report on hand! I plan to go through it in more depth and leave some more nuanced feedback. I want to add a note that I would also be interested in seeing the rough cost-effectiveness estimates as @JoshuaBlake  has mentioned.

This was pretty much my goal with this! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

That depends on your primary interest in biosecurity. If it is more policy-oriented then maybe the Johns Hopkins or the BWC ones. If you are more interested in epidemiology then maybe the Pandora Report? If you are more interested in technological developments then newsletters 13-15 might be a better fit. These are just loose suggestions.

A few more you might share: * Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction mailing list * Biological Security (Weekly Updates) from Parlimentarians for Global Action

There are other lists of lists with podcasts so I wanted to keep it to just newsletters. However, I will definitely check out the podcast thank you!

I am so glad you reached out! Hopefully we can stay friendly :)

Hi Douglas,

This is such an important topic and I would love to hear more about it. I definitely want to hear more about the range of disability factors that Giving What We Can used in 2016 . I think my suggestion would be to hear more about calls to action, because now that we have identified this as a problem what are some things we can do? Really hope to continue discussing this.
