We live during the most important time in human history. Millions of years could lay ahead of us, and we have the potential to eradicate diseases, poverty and inequality. The last century we have also developed technique that could lead to our destruction and humanity is not doing enough to mitigate these existential risks. That is the precipice we now stand in front of. In his book The Precipice, the Oxford moral philosopher Toby Ord explores this important topic. He describes both the natural and the anthropogenic risks we face, as well as the moral framework and strategies we need to handle these risks.
This autumn EA Stockholm will arrange a book circle to read and discuss this important book. It will be led by Marcus Widengren who has a master's degree in theoretical philosophy and a bachelor´s degree in economics. There will be four meetings on Thursday evenings between 17.30 and 19.00 on the following dates:

Meeting 1 - Thursday 7th of October about The Stakes
Meeting 2 - Thursday 28th of October about The Risks
Meeting 3 - Thursday 18th of November about The Path Forward
Meeting 4 - Thursday 9th of December (bonus meeting on a relevant topic that we choose together)

The meetings will take place at The Park Södra on Birger Magnus Ladulåsgatan 1.

Before each meeting the participants are expected to have read the relevant part of the book, and everyone will be sent reading instructions and preparatory questions by email ahead of each meeting. If someone didn't have time to read everything, we will start each meeting with a short summary. It's preferable if participants can partake in all four meetings, but it is also ok if someone only wants to attend some of the meetings. Preparatory questions and discussions are planned to be held in English, but if everyone attending speaks Swedish, we can switch languages. If someone does not have access to the book, there are books that can be borrowed. If you mention that in the application form, we will take care of that.
