Why this talk:
Plagues throughout history suggest the potential for biology to cause global catastrophe. This potential increases in step with the march of biotechnological progress. Global Catastrophic Biological Risks (GCBRs) may compose a significant share of all global catastrophic risk, and, if so, a credible threat to humankind.

As we individually and comunally look for insight and support in protecting and creating the most beautiful futures for life on earth then, a major resource for us will be a better understanding of GCBRs and what we might get to do to mitigate them.

What to expect:
Chris Bakerlee is a Senior Program Associate at Open Philanthropy, focusing on design and implementation of policies and technologies for mitigating anthropogenic biorisks.

Chris will give a talk explaining Global Catastrophic Biorisk (GCBR) generally and pointing us to some of the most promising pathways for their mitigation, followed by a Q&A.

This presentation will be recorded and shared on the Effective Altruism Toronto Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/EAtoronto), but the faces and and names of participants won't be visible in the recording.

Welcomingness:
New and returning members are welcome to join us, and those with some interest in understanding or working in this cause area will get the most out of this event.
