This week's speaker is Julia Wise, who will be giving a history of effective altruism. As ever, there'll be free pizza and plenty of time to chat afterwards. Everyone very welcome - just turn up!

Effective altruism encompasses people working on things ranging from wild animal welfare to mental health interventions to space colonisation. How did that come to be? Julia will walk us through some strands that came together to form the effective altruism movement, and discuss how things have changed and where the movement is headed now.

Julia works at the Centre for Effective Altruism as a point person for the effective altruism movement, meaning the she is a person you can go to with concerns about problems you’ve noticed or experienced in the EA community. More generally, Julia works to make the global EA community stronger and more welcoming. She has written many popular posts about how we might approach EA as humans with our own needs. Before joining the Centre for Effective Altruism, Julia was a social worker, and studied sociology at Bryn Mawr College.

Join us an hour earlier, at 5, for a drop-in discussion on a topic TBC. We also have co-working spaces from 1pm and drop in to chat to a committee member about anything from 1 pm.

When you come to EA Oxford events, you're agreeing to be considerate, and take a lateral flow test if you aren't vaccinated. Read more: https://eaoxford.com/inclusion-policy

The HB Allen Centre is fully wheelchair accessible. The pizza should cater for all dietary requirements. Do message us if you have any questions about accessibility or anything else!
