In this session we will take a closer look at games and interactive systems in general, asking which properties make them fun to engage with and how the toolbox of game design theory can help us shape systems in a way that these properties emerge.
From there, we examine the concept of "depth" in games: how it can be captured, and how strategically deep games often require players to balance their decision-making between heuristic and search-based approaches.
Finally, we try to generalize the previous ideas and figure out what makes a real-world system "game-like" enough for these tools to apply, identifying a few relevant examples.
You don't need gaming experience to take part, just some enthusiasm for thinking about systems. As a longtime freelancer in educational games, I will also do my best to answer any related questions you throw at me.
This session will be at Nikolai's office. For the address look in our Signal group. If you're not yet part of that, write an e-mail to hamburg [at] effektiveraltruismus [dot] de to get the address.
