ABOUT THE TOPIC: What should Christians in EA think about longtermism?
Longtermism is an idea that has gained increasing amounts of support in the EA movement and publicity outside of it. It says we should care about all humans equally regardless of when they live. Because the number of humans who could live in the future is potentially huge, we would be obligated to direct a significant amount of our resources to impriving their lives - in strong longtermism, even most of them.
This is contrasts with so-called neartermism which says we should spend our efforts on improving the lives of those living now.
STYLE: This is not a debate, so we will try to keep the tone non-adversarial even while allowing and encouraging exploration of possible disagreements between the panelists.
FORMAT: all panelists have a maximum of 5 minutes to present their stance and opening thoughts on the topic. After that, moderated discussion follows for 30 minutes. The panelists are then given a chance to present their closing thoughts, and the audience has around 20 minutes to pose questions to the panelists.
