Summary:

Effective Altruism Melbourne and Effective Animal Advocacy Australia (EAAA) are delighted to have Martin Gould from Open Philanthropy speak to us on March 4.

Martin Gould is a Senior Program Associate on the Farm Animal Welfare team at Open Philanthropy, which is a major philanthropic grantmaker whose mission is to help others as much as they can with the resources available to them.

At the same time, this is an opportunity to celebrate the launch of EAAA, a community focused on applying the ideas of effective altruism to animal advocacy and finding opportunities for impact.

We'll be serving plant-based pizza!

We’d also love to have you join us online if you’re not in Melbourne.

Event program:

6:30-6:45: Arrival and mingling
6:45-6:50: Introductions
6:50-7:35: Q&A with Martin
7:35-7:50: Audience Q&A
7:50-8:30: Snacks and mingling

We will be asking Martin some difficult and thought-provoking questions, including:
- What is an animal-related view that you have changed your mind on recently?
- What do you think are the most promising ways to achieve institutional change for animals?
- Do you think it could be cost-effective to fund popular media such as movies?
- What do you think about the feasibility of cell-based meat or other alternative proteins to replace conventional animal products?
- What do you think are some of the best actions we can take to help animals with our careers, time, or money?

Background:

Effective altruism (EA) is a research field and community that aims to find the best ways to help others, and put them into practice. We have many great opportunities to do good, but some are much more effective than others. By prioritising our resources (money, careers, time) and thinking carefully about the best ways to help, we can do far more to tackle the world’s biggest problems.

EA Melbourne is a community of people interested in effective altruism. The group provides a forum for people to learn about the ideas of effective altruism and opportunities for impact.

Effective Animal Advocacy Australia is a new community interested in applying the ideas of effective altruism to animal advocacy. The group also provides a space to share opportunities for impact in animal advocacy.
