Megan Jamer and Avi Norowitz from the EA Donation Matching Initiative (www.eagivingtuesday.org) will give a talk and Q&A about the project's past successes, lessons learned, and plans for 2021. As a donor, a nonprofit, or a member of the effective altruism community, we hope you’ll consider attending this talk and Q&A to learn more!

The EA Donation Matching Initiative, a project of Rethink Charity, organizes people around a shared goal: direct counterfactually valid matching dollars to effective nonprofits. This year, the project’s main focus is Facebook’s first-come, first-served donation match, coming up very soon on November 30, 2021 at 8 a.m. EST / 5 a.m. PST.

Over 440 people participated in the EA Donation Matching Initiative in 2020. We faced major setbacks, with Facebook introducing a two-tiered approach and significantly reducing the amount of 100% matching funds available. Nonetheless, these hundreds of people in the EA community directed an additional $411,693 USD in Facebook matching to effective nonprofits, representing 25% of donated amounts.

While 2020 performance wasn't as strong as in previous years, the organizing team is hopeful that improved strategies in 2021 will help the EA community continue to direct a significant amount of Facebook’s matching funds to effective nonprofits. Individual donors may decide to focus on the 100% match, the 10% match, or both.

The EA Donation Matching Initiative team supports both donors and highly effective nonprofits participating in this project. In addition to setting up systems and processes, the team provides analysis-based recommendations, detailed instructions, and responsive support. Basically, the team works to make it as easy and effective as possible for you or your organization to participate.

If you’re curious or have any questions, we hope you’ll consider attending this talk, hosted by EA NYC
