For our next EA Hamburg meetup, we’ll discuss the EA Forum post If wild animal welfare is intractable, everything is, which examines a striking claim: that the extreme complexity and uncertainty of wild animal welfare may not be a special case, but rather a mirror of challenges that appear across many cause areas.
The article explores questions like: What does “intractable” really mean in practice? How should uncertainty affect our moral and strategic reasoning? And if we’re willing to engage with messy, poorly understood systems here, what does that imply for other domains such as global health, AI alignment, or climate policy?
The session will be an interactive discussion, combining a short introduction with group conversation. We’ll focus on clarifying the argument, stress-testing its assumptions, and reflecting on what it implies for effective altruism more broadly.
As always, newcomers and regulars alike are very welcome. For a short introduction to why some EAs care about Wild Animal Suffering in the first place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dp6gObE9eA
We look forward to seeing you there!
