Jonathan Leighton is an ethics strategist, social activist and Executive Director of OPIS, a think-and-do tank he founded to promote the prevention of intense suffering as the highest ethical priority of a compassionate society and those who govern it. On Wednesday, 5 April 2023 at 20.00, at Booze Cooperativa (upstairs) in Athens, he will be discussing his newly published book, The Tango of Ethics: Intuition, Rationality and the Prevention of Suffering. The book proposes a deep, rigorous reassessment of how we think about ethics, challenging several largely unquestioned assumptions and biases.
The presentation of the book will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
In the spirit of balance - a key theme of the book - Junior X, present for years on the Athens music scene including at many ecstatic dances, will be DJing afterwards for those of us who feel like moving.
Entrance is free. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Some reactions to The Tango of Ethics:
“Nearly all of us, philosophers or not, should attach much greater weight to the prevention of severe suffering. This engaging, accessible, and wide-ranging book provides many highly suggestive arguments in support of this claim." -Roger Crisp, Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Oxford
"Leighton’s The Tango of Ethics is a well-researched book addressing the most important topic in our universe – the suffering of sentient beings and its implications for ethics, philosophy and technology.” -Roman V. Yampolskiy, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Louisville, author of Artificial Superintelligence: A Futuristic Approach
“Once in a while you read a book you wish everyone would read. A book in which you underline passages on every page and put tons of exclamation marks in the margin, because you know you'll need to revisit it often. Jonathan Leighton's The Tango of Ethics is such a book." -Tobias Leenaert, co-founder of ProVeg International, author of How to Create a Vegan World: A Pragmatic Approach
“The Tango of Ethics… transcends the limitations of most philosophy books... takes an interesting and important approach to help us recognize and address the most pressing issue we face." -Matt Ball, co-founder and President of One Step For Animals, author of The Animal Activist’s Handbook
