Hi! Our next local group meeting is going to be a special one:
A hybrid event with an online guest talk introducing Biosecurity & Effective Pandemic Prevention plus a Q&A and local discussions afterwards!
The event will be on Wednesday evening, January 17 at 7:30 pm.
The local part will, as usual, be in Philosophenweg 12 (Physics Institute, Neuenheim), room 106, (1st floor).
If you're not near Heidelberg that evening, you can join for the talk via Google Meet (http://meet.google.com/ynx-qwmm-eue) at around 7:45 pm.
Quick intro to Biosecurity:
In today's globalized world, we constantly face the threat of new diseases. Natural pandemics can cause significant disruption and damage to our societies. However, the potential impact of a pandemic caused by a deliberately modified pathogen is even more alarming. And with rapid progress in biotechnology and artificial intelligence, creating such pathogens is becoming increasingly easy.
The recent pandemic highlighted that we’re ill-prepared to prevent and contain new infectious diseases. In response, the emerging field of biosecurity is investigating effective interventions to prevent and mitigate these growing threats.
In our discussions, we'll explore both challenges and solutions to safeguarding our future against the whole spectrum of biological threats, natural as well as engineered.
As always, there will also be room to discuss general topics related to effective altruism, to socialize and to have a good time together.
If you have any questions, just mail us at heidelberg@effektiveraltruismus.de.
Looking forward to hearing your questions, thoughts and ideas on on this significant issue.
Birk (on behalf of the local group)
