This event is for: anyone new to Effective Altruism
The many worthwhile causes that exist can make it difficult to decide which charitable organisations are most deserving of our finite resources, and which global problems to dedicate our careers towards solving.
There are significant opportunity costs associated with every cause we choose to support, making it important for us to discover and contribute to the very best philanthropic opportunities.
How do we decide which causes are the best? For example, is working to strengthen America’s democracy better than researching deliberate climate intervention or striving to end global poverty? What about work on deadly pathogen outbreaks or projects to improve conditions for factory farmed animals? Does it even make sense to compare them? Can we develop frameworks to quantify the relative impact of causes?
Effective Altruism (EA) attempts to answer these questions through the use of high-quality evidence and careful reasoning. Effective Altruists recognise that not all causes are made equal, and that well-considered shifts in resource allocation can lead to large gains in lives saved or dramatically improved.
This introductory presentation is intended for those new to EA wishing to get a better understanding of its aims and key ideas.
There will be an opportunity after the presentation for attendees to ask committee members questions and to mingle with other attendees.
Looking forward to meeting you,
~ The EA Adelaide Team
