Starting September 7, 2022 we are holding a weekly book club at the Barn Light Bar downtown to read and critically discuss Will MacAskill's new book, "What We Owe The Future". The book argues the case for "longtermism", an idea gaining in influence within the Effective Altruism movement and society at large.
We'll go through one chapter a week. The first event on September 7 we will just meet and discuss. After that, we'll read a chapter a week and discuss together each week, starting with the Introduction on September 14.
We don't want anyone to miss out for financial reasons, so if the cost of getting the book is a barrier for you to attend, or even it's not unaffordable but the cost of buying the book would make you hesitate even a bit to read it, we'd like to put a free copy in your hands.
If you don't drink beer, that's fine. Barn Light Bar has a great selection of alcoholic drinks and baristas who will make you a great coffee.
If you don't read the book, you're still welcome, but we think you'll get more out of the event if you do read the book.

We strive to ensure a diverse set of voices are heard. We want to emphasize that women and non-binary people, people of color, and people of all ages, religions, belief systems, and political perspectives are welcome at our meetings to share in our common interest in effective altruism.
