Hi harry, Thank you for sharing this incredibly helpful information! May I ask you what work were you doing before you came across EA.

Happy to share!  I graduated with an engineering degree at a time when digital marketing was just beginning to emerge. Recognizing its potential, I eagerly embarked on various business ventures in this new field. This path was not without its challenges, and I faced several failures in the initial years.  However, by the grace of God, I was able to establish a marketing company, which I led for 7.5 years.  Then, with a desire to prioritize my family, my wife and children, I transitioned to more stable roles, serving as a marketing manager in two different full-time positions for 6.5 years.  That's where the fortuitous layoff happened, that led to me to the EA community :)

Thank you for writing this. The article gives a good overview of EA activities in real time.

However I am of the opinion but I believe the title is a bit flawed. I personally would not position EA into something bad. "Not as bad as you think" positions EA like it is something ominous and your blog is trying to persuade the reader otherwise. I personally did not get this feeling when I read through the blog.  So I would title it as: "What is bad in EA?"or "Is EA as good and effective as it says it is?". There are better ways to keep it open ended.

Thank you, much appreciated!  Fair enough on the title - it's something I went back and forth on quite a lot, and wasn't convinced it was the best title. I was looking for something a bit funny or catchy, and not sure your suggestions meet that criteria. I also considered: "In defence of Effective Altruism" or "EA: Is there a better alternative?" but titles are hard!

Hi Julia,

Thank you for the post, I think the Community health team is quite resourceful in situations like this.

My personal belief is that the community health team should be most concerned about about changes in views towards EAs after SBF's downfall. In this video this person probably lost faith in EA due to the incident (or at least became more averse to it). I am not concerned about this one non aligned person losing faith in EA however since EA has closely associated itself with SBF due to his funds, it might lead to an overall bad image of EAs ... I will remember this article. Very interesting and thoughtful way of introducing people to EA.

Hi Jessica,

I'm Arghya. Your post is really insightful and I appreciate the depth in your ideas. I have applied to the UGAP to start a group at my university.

I have many potential board members on my list however I am afraid of selecting someone without meeting them in person. This is mostly because I am afraid that some of them might be interested just because of the "hype" around EA. I had a meeting with Kirsten Angeles and she told me to take the risky step of getting someone on board. What would you have done on my situation?

Do you have any specific str... (read more)

Are there any updates on your group? How did you select your BMs and how did it go eventually?

I know that authors sometimes forget to check comments on their posts, so in case you haven't received an answer and you're still looking for one, you might have more luck using Jessica's email which is listed here.

I am a frequent reader of the forum and I wanted to make a post regarding Cause Exploration (Prizes). I searched the tag to get a general sense of  the "bar" you look forward to. There seem to be only three posts so far. Am I missing out on something?

Hi arghya - sorry I missed this post. Just as a reminder, we're paying $200 for the first 200 submissions made in good faith, so don't feel put off submitting something if you don't think you have time to write something that you think will be competitive for the top prizes. We suggest my colleague Lauren Gilbert's shallow on civil conflict as an example of a shallow investigation of a potential cause area. She's also published one more recently on telecoms in LMICs. There's also the guidance page of the Cause Exploration Prizes website.  Looking forward to hopefully reading your submission!

It looks like three posts have been submitted publicly, but additional submissions may have been made privately. I suggest posting questions about the Cause Exploration Prize as a comment to the post announcing the initiative rather than here, since it is more likely to be seen by the organizers.
