Would it be possible to organise sessions in other timezones if there is demand for it? Like Europe, India,...

Yea, depending on success, we might split the next round in two to get global coverage.

@Brendon_Wong @Quinn @Coleman did anything come out from this? I would be interested in knowledge graphs for personal knowledge management as well as for KM within the EA community.

I had a great chat with Quinn who shared some excellent insights about the space! I'm continuing active work on Cosmic, although it'll probably be at least several months before the alpha is ready, and longer for community features to arrive. We're excited by lots of use cases. Since you run a directory project, one relevant use case is creating organized, interoperable, and collectively updated collections of structured community knowledge, like all of the EA orgs, projects, etc. in existence.

This is very helpful, thanks for doing it!

How is the maintenance of the site planned?
Is there a person in charge of periodically checking the different sources of grants and updating the page, or is there something automated?
As a possible feature it would be nice if it would show somewhere when this database was last updated :)

Yeah that's the hard part that I'm going to be thinking about a lot this week. My guess is some funders will be easy to automatically update because they release their grants in a CSV and I already have scripts for reading them (EA funds, Open Phil), but others need to be done very manually which seems super annoying (ACX). I would probably only add the donations of major funds and not scrape people's blogs or whatever Vipul/Issa did to add a lot of smaller donations, excepting maybe connecting with Giving What We Can from individuals' donation data. Anyway, I probably don't want to spent more than ~3 hours once per month updating the data, but I'll try to be as efficient as possible with that time!

Thanks for the comment Simon. In principle you can automate almost everything in the cloud. Besides, we specialize in Data Science services so in the part "What are some example projects?" we emphasize to make a short meeting, because the needs of each organization are different and we can advise better knowing a little bit about the organization.

They all offer free or strongly discounted services for EA Orgs.

More professional services:

  • SEADS offers Data Science services  to EA organizations
  • User-Friendly is an EA-aligned marketing agency
  • Anti Entropy offers services related operations for EA organizations

Together with Altruistic Agency these Agencies are working together to form an umbrella organisation but more info on this will soon be announced

Thanks! I don't have time to check all the links atm. Do you know whether any/all of them offer free or strongly discounted services?

Very good post! I agree with most of the points and the framing helps to see where there is room for improvement
Regarding this sentence: "In practice, it seems that many physical hubs but one virtual/intellectual hub may be best."
Do you have any particular thoughts on how to optimize  a virtual hub or Schelling point?
For example, EAGx Virtual will take place in October and there might be some things that could make it a better Schelling point.

For "virtual/intellectual hub", the central example in my mind was the EA Forum, and more generally the way in which there's a web of links (both literal hyperlinks and vaguer things) between the Forum, EA-relevant blogs, work put out by EA orgs, etc. Specifically in the sense that if you stumble across and properly engage with one bit of it, e.g. an EA blog post on wild animal suffering, then there's a high (I'd guess?)  chance you'll soon see a lot of other stuff too, like being aware of centralised infrastructure like the Forum and 80k advising, and becoming aware of the central ideas like cause prio and x-risk. Therefore maybe the virtual/physical distinction was a bit misleading, and the real distinction is more like "Schelling point for intellectual output / ideas" vs "Schelling point for meeting people". That being said, a point that comes to mind is that geographic dispersion is one of the most annoying things for real-world Schelling points and totally absent*  if you do it virtually, so maybe there's some perspective like "don't think about EAGx Virtual as recreating an EAG but virtually, but rather as a chance to create a meeting-people-Schelling-point without the traditional constraints, and maybe this ends up looking more ambitious"? (*minus timezones, but you can mail people melatonin beforehand :) )

You are right that we could have phrased it better. However, it is not about convincing people of specific conclusions but about engaging in a deeper way with the topic. Every week there will be open discussions and the last week deals explicitly with Criticisms of longtermism

Sounds great!

I think most of these orgs know each other. CorrelAid for example was founded by someone who knew Datakind it collaborates with DataCross

I imagine most orgs have a long tail of data science projects which aren't important enough to go through the hassle of hiring a consultant, but that would still add some value. Meanwhile, students are in constant search of important real world problems to work on for their research or clubs (I was in Cornell Data Science) but generally don't have a good idea of what would actually be useful. Having a place where orgs can just write down such problems and students/academics can find them seems like it would potentially unlock a lot of value.

I definitely ag... (read more)

"Introduction SEADS" is at the top of the post :) but you are right and with some restructuring it would have been clearer.

At the moment the main difference is that we are focused on EA projects exclusively, either coming from EA Orgs or related to infrastructure.

A couple more differences:
- The model of this organizations is rather fixed with a very strong focus on being the middle man between projects and volunteers. We would like to experiment with new approaches as mentioned under "Possible directions for the future"
- Some of these organizations tend to have also a big focus on learning, meaning including participants in their teams that are not very experienced... (read more)

Great article! Here another list from the study-buddy channel in the Virtual Programs Slack workspace. The channel is made to promote self-study of this kind of EA material. https://bit.ly/3rblLj1

Thank you very much! One insight I got from the list is to simply put Why Nations Fail (and accordingly Guns, Germs, and Steel) into the Global Poverty / Development bracket

Looking forward! I really think this can be as good or better than in person EAG(x)s

From the reasons to avoid engaging in interpersonal conflict " i) isn't going to change anyone's actions much; ii) isn't going to make the world a much better place, even if it does change their actions; or iii) is very hard to persuade others about".

I think even if all of these apply it might be worth it to engage in interpersonal conflict if you can learn from it. Discussing with someone and then reflecting on the discussion and how you discussed can help you improve how you handle these conflicts. If the cost of interpersonal tension is not too high it is a price worth paying for your improvement.

Great post! The "list of EA-aligned organizations"  seems very useful. Do you know if it is linked to some more official EA source like the CEA website or 80k website? and do you know how up to date it is?
Initially it seems like core EA information that is hanging in a random Notion page but I am probably wrong

Thanks! AFAIA, the list of orgs is not linked to any official EA source, but a wiki that can be updated by anyone.  If you're looking for something more official, the list of organizations on 80k's job board might be better. But it's missing some orgs that are clearly EA-aligned, e.g., the national regranting orgs.

Thanks for the detailed answers. I would be interested in hearing more about "how to get good mentorship given a specific job" in case you can redirect me to a particular article or similar.

May I user test my mentorship article with you once I have a reasonable draft? :) (If you're in that situation right now and prefer not waiting, consider contacting me directly. Maybe we'll write it together!)

Nice post! about the mentorship I wonder how much differs the theory from the practice. In my experience even if the employer mentions mentorship on the interview it might well be that there is close to nothing in the real job.

I would be interested in hearing how it was for other developers. If they got much mentorship and how they went about finding companies which offer it.

Thanks! Regarding the mentorship, note there is a huge difference between asking "is there mentorship" and hearing "sure! mentorship is one of our core values!" to asking specifically "will I have 1 hour per week with a senior dev where I can ask questions that will help me improve?" There are other questions you could ask too, but more generally this is a very common problem that developers (including myself in the past) fall into, which is why I recommend these questions. Many hiring managers will, eh, twist the truth about the subjective meaning of "a lot", but way fewer will blatantly lie to something completely objective and factual such as wether they do one-on-ones (and in what frequency and so on).

I do not know of other examples but I would be interested in knowing the data use/needs of EA organizations

Thanks for the comment Alex. As far as I see the MoocLab Group would be not topic specific unless the topic is general EA. So there would be a mix of people who might be interested for example in Animal Welfare but not AI or the other way around, so it would not be easy to find a buddy. I do not have much experience with these MoocLab Groups though so if it is possible to set different topic-pages inside a group let me know because then I think it would be interesting.

Regarding the MVP probably it will be Facebook Pages/Groups (one for each EA Topic) but I will update when it is done or maybe announce it in a different post. In the future there is still the possibility to move everything a new independent platform if needed

Will keep an eye out for future posts! :)

Even if they use slack/discord very little: They use a new [a new platform that doesn't exist yet and nobody ever used and everyone knows that nobody used] even less. No?

The platform, as MOOCLAB, is thought to be for the first contact to find the buddy, after that you share your email/fb/... with your buddy and coordinate however you want. In the new platform you would automatically get email notifications when someone replies to your message or sends you a message so the interaction with the platform itself is minimal. I know in slack you can also specify... (read more)

  • Facebook: not optimal but as MVP might do
  • Slack/Discord: it has nothing to do with the features but with how little people use (or are comfortable using) slack/discord outside their  already existing EA Groups/Projects. In Facebook people are more active in general but if you have data to prove my wrong happy to be wrong :)
  • what I imagine as MVP as mentioned in the post is a simpler MOOCLAB: https://www.mooclab.club/members/?key=study_buddy_members

I think also the critical mass of people is important. The post has not reached many people so probab... (read more)

Even if they use slack/discord very little: They use a new [a new platform that doesn't exist yet and nobody ever used and everyone knows that nobody used] even less. No? I agree, and again, this is an advantage that a new platform will never have. (right?) Do you mean "Facebook Group" (where you wrote "page")? If not - then I didn't understand, could you explain in other words?

An alternative, to some of the mentioned points, could be this https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/SsBgdFJz8w7QMyL38/ea-online-learning-buddy-platform although it is originally thought for In-Depth Virtual Program

Invitation sent in Linkedin ;)

It could be an option. However, here some points to the existing platforms:

  • Facebook: as far as I know you cannot have in a group different pages for different topics. Scalability would also be a problem  in the future for example to add new features
  • Slack: in the 10+ EA slack groups I am in, most of them people go to introduce themselves and never come back
  • Discord: similar to slack

a small MVP would be I think fairly easy to implement. But if the platform development seems to be a constraint sure an existing platform shall be considered

Perhaps have one group for one topic as an MVP? Do you think this is a problem with the features in Slack/Discord? This is not my intuition, especially since the features of Facebook/Slack/Discord don't seem to be enough. Maybe I'm not in sync with what you imagine as an MVP? My prior for this kind of project is that the bottle neck is something between "critical mass of people" and "some idea [product market fit?] on what to do together (such as meet-once-a-week or whatever)", and not the technology. In other words, it's not like this project will succeed-or-fail based on having an extra click to find a document, or having a slightly better filtering mechanism. But this is only a prior, I expect it will either really resonate as true or that I'm missing something

Cool idea! I think my original question was more oriented to "saving EA money", either because the employees decide to do it voluntarily, or because the EA organisation decides to "open a branch" in a low cost country where the employees are paid less but can maintain a similar standard of living (with more sunshine) while keeping the quality and quantity of their work.

Has anyone considered this in general for remote EA work? (not only Earning to give)

There are several EA Jobs (researching at Rethink Priorities, tech stuff....) that could be done remotely. So one option might be paying a salary and living expenses to these employees in a low cost country and have their own community. If they want they could even live together with like minded EAs

I am considering the option of working on an EA-related full-time project that I will start in December in part remotely as a digital-nomad, especially in order to know people from other EA communities mainly all around Europe.

Some of my  RP colleagues and I are considering having a contingent or informal work retreat in the Bahamas, yes.  Note that the Bahamas is close to uniquely bad from a "saving money" perspective. If you just want warm weather, fast internet, and good beaches, Thailand is probably a lot better.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah reading the book I got the impression that the example the author uses could be an isolated one and it was not everywhere like that. However, I also did not find easy to find statistics on the problem in internet. But your response seems more accurate than what it is presented in the book

I only just saw your reply. Here's a (fairly old) report that discusses organic farming in the UK, including management of disease, that may be useful - though note it was sponsored by a organic-promoting organisation, but it does include criticism and doesn't just seem to be a piece of marketing: http://charliepyesmith.com/wp-content/uploads/2003/01/Batteries-not-included.pdf . I don't know of any other thorough reports - it would be useful if there were more.

Hi alene,

thanks for your reply. My question was not really (a) nor (b) but I think they are related.

Here again my questions:

  1. In "humane" farms the animals have, in their whole lives, negative net well being?  are their QALYs in life negative so that it is for them better not to be born?
  2. My question here is if anybody has reliable numbers for the greenhouse gases from "humane" farms. It would be interesting to know how much worse they are and how hard it would be to offset these emissions
  3. I would like to know if it is a general thing in
