The annual EA Community Summer camp is just around the corner! Each year, we gather for several days near Berlin to celebrate the summer and the connections we can build with each other. What makes this event special?

Summer camp!

  • The core format of the event is a summer camp. We will leave our usual comforts behind and make time for joyful connection and playful activities, spend time in nature and maybe even learn something new. Most participants will camp in tents, and we aim to cultivate an atmosphere of exploration, growth, and togetherness.

Participant-run!

  • All activities are 100% brought and run by the participants. Any participant can run an activity, workshop, or experience. From campfire songs to parkour, from meditation to workshops on creative writing or authentic relating, this can be a great place to try your hand at facilitating something new in a supportive environment!
  • All logistics are 100% handled by the participants. Participants take on various volunteer roles: the organisers are volunteers, other participants set up the space, keep the event going throughout and return the venue to the way that we found it at the end. There will be many opportunities for you to help out both ahead of the event and on site. Shifts include cooking, cleaning common spaces, keeping an eye out to make sure everyone is doing well, and more.

Community-focused!

  • The history and heart of this event lies around the EA community and ideaspace. The purpose is for people to reunite with old friends and meet new people while taking a break from doing the most good we can. This event is intended to be a great fit for those who (1) are excited about the points above (Summer camp! Participant run!) and also (2) have values and interests that roughly align with some large-net idea of effective altruism.

What is this event not good for?

This event is not a good place to get work done or progress on your career planning. We want participants to enjoy a nice summer camp with various social activities and to connect with like-minded members of the community in an informal way, leaving our titles and suits behind. If you are not yet a part of the EA ideaspace, this is not the best place to jump in; we recommend visiting a local EA meetup first.

What else is good to know about the event?

  • This event is independently organised and self-funded, and it does not represent any particular part of the EA movement or its associated institutions. Charges for the event are intended to be at-cost.
  • Food is provided. A basic breakfast is put out by volunteers, lunch is catered, and dinner is cooked by volunteers. Snacks will also be available to keep our energy up throughout the day. All food will be vegan.
  • Sleeping options are either (1) in a tent that you bring or (2) in a dorm-style setup. We expect that roughly ½ of people will be sleeping in tents.

Testimonials

Summer Camp is a collection of kind, caring and curious people meeting to take some time out of the altruistic pursuits. I love the silliness of the workshops, hanging out with great people or just enjoying being outside every day ❤️ peace out, bubu

Summer Camp has been one of the coolest experiences of the year! Met some of my closest friends there, tried out & learned a bunch of new things, made some life changing discoveries and just had so so so much fun
