We're excited to announce that applications are now open to XLab's 2023 Summer Research Fellowship! We think (and last year's fellows agree) that the fellowship is a great opportunity to trial a research position or explore x-risk as a new area of focus. We're looking to support projects in the problem areas of AI Governance, technical AI Safety, Biosecurity, Extreme Climate Change, Nuclear Safety, as well as policy interventions for the aforementioned. But, you don't need to have a fully formed research proposal as we and your mentor will help you find, refine and scope a project for the fellowship.

The fellowship is a 10-week, full time, in-person opportunity to pursue an independent or team-based research project with mentorship from an x-risk researcher or faculty member and 1:1 support from program staff. Weekly programming will include peer review sessions, group dinners, and workshops aimed at building your research skills and productivity.

Details on last year’s fellowship can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/XLabSRF2022

Details

  • The program will run from June 12th to August 18th on the University of Chicago campus.
  • Applications are open to graduate and undergraduate students from all areas of study, research experience levels, and previous exposure to existential risk topics.
    • The only requirements are that you have a US work authorization and that you are willing to be in Chicago for the duration of the program.
  •  The position comes with two stipend options:
    • a $7000 stipend with complimentary university housing and meal plan,
      • Rooms will likely be doubles (i.e. staying with a roommate) and come furnished with a bed, desk, and dresser. Dining plans would cover all-you-can-eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at University dining halls for the duration of the program.
    • or a $9600 stipend if arranging separate room and board (housing in Hyde Park is generally easy to find).

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Applications due April 18th, but will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We expect to fund 10-20 fellows (with at least 50% being AI safety and governance projects) and recommend spending no more than 1.5 hours on the application. The second stage of the process will in involve a remote 30 minute interview. Feel free to reach out to zrudolph@uchicago.edu  (or leave a comment) if you have any questions.
