There's a small (maybe ~20%) chance I will be offered a technical job with BIS, aiding some kind of semiconductor export regulation in the near future. This is not a particularly large chance but if it comes to pass I will appreciate having discussed it a bit in advance.
The core issue is very simple, I live on the other side of the country from where the job is located and do not really want to move, it would be a huge expensive pain in a number of ways. So I would like to ask how much might we expect this position to increase my impact on positive AI futures so I can have a better understanding of the benefits in my cost/benefit analysis.

Right now I am a process engineer at a university, working on semiconductors and whatnot. I am a big believer in The Center For AI Policy's outlines for compute governance and the role BIS would play in that. But since the center has shut down and, more so, given the direction of the federal government and national AI policy I wonder if this would provide any leverage at all? I think it would be perhaps useful for putting myself in a position to get an impactful position in the future, does that sound plausible? I know there are a some people here who have spent time thinking about such things and may have some idea of what such paths may look like. Certainly though my current job is comfortable there is no path towards doing any AI policy work. Sorry I do not really have many thoughts here to elaborate on, mostly interested in the perspective of others (if anyone cares to spend time replying for this relatively unlikely event)
