Someone got in touch asking me a question I think deserves more answers than just mine, but they'd rather not post it under their own name, so I'm posting it here with their permission with identifying details removed.
Here is their question:
"I have a YouTube channel that I've pivoted towards AI safety content. I've been trying to decide which audience to target, and the one I'm least sure about is whether it's worth making videos aimed at bringing more researchers into the field.
I used to make very technical STEM content and I saw how it attracted a smaller but very committed audience. I've been wondering whether to do the same for AI safety research, with a call to action asking viewers to apply for a fellowship.
I've recently decided against it and to target the public instead, because I'm not convinced the field can easily absorb many more junior researchers. But I'm quite unsure, and if people have a strong opinion either way I'd love to hear it."
I'll post my own answer below, but would be intereted to hear others' thoughts.
