I am curious about current opinions and past discussions of reasoning types (for example, inductive, deductive, abductive, bayesian, analogical, case-based, or more generally rule-based, bayesian, and case-based) within the EA community. In particular, have there been discussions about the context for each? I would love to read that. Are there published papers that EA's think are fundamental on these topics?

Ideally, I will get an answer that is or points to:

  • a discussion that contextualizes the different varieties from the EA perspective
  • a discussion that explains why bayesian reasoning substitutes for or subsumes other reasoning types.

but I also welcome your comments on my search and suggestions for where to look or what to ask after. Even tag suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you.
