The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at Cambridge University is getting a new Director – Professor Matthew Connelly will be our Director from July 2023. Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh, our Interim Director, is staying at CSER and will be focussing more on AI governance and safety research.

Prof Connelly is currently a Professor of international and global history at Columbia University, and for the last seven years has been Co-Director of its social science research centre, the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy. He has significant policy experience as a consultant for the Gates Foundation, the World Bank, and the Department of Homeland Security and Senate committees. He is the author of The Declassification Engine: What History Reveals about America’s Top Secrets and Fatal Misconception (an Economist and Financial Times book of the year). His next book is on “the history of the end of the world”, a subject on which he has taught multiple courses.
