I am no way an expert in AI safety and much less so on career guidance, however I would say I am somewhat in a similar background that of you, small town form India --- engineering degree --- working full time in software industry --- thinking everyday how can I do more. So my take so far is AI safety maybe or may not be the right place for you but that does not mean you should not explore. I would recommend to try out bluedot impact's technical AI safety course to begin with, in my experience it is a nice warm community with diverse thinking. I am also drawn much more towards what and how AI learns and what does it represents inside its learned objects and I am only able to figure this out through the bluedot impact's course. SO my answer to your question is don't come in to expect a clear answer but explore nonetheless as it ight give you a more surprising answer.
