Kirsty - Thanks for this post! I agree that EAs who are interested in global health and development should consider the most cost-effective education interventions as a compelling pathway toward higher incomes and greater human flourishing.
I'm the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Learning Alliance, which is an Ambitious Impact (AIM)-incubated education NGO. We're working to scale Structured Pedagogy in Uganda - partnering with the existing government school system to drive up early grades literacy by helping teachers be more effective. Now in our second year, we currently serve 20,000 pupils and are working to evaluate and refine our impact; with a rapid scaling trajectory, we target serving nearly 800,000 pupils at a cost of $5.50/pupil per year, and $20 per standard deviation of improvement in reading scores by 2031. (Put more simply: we think we can teach kids to read for <$16 over 3 years, which is a low price for a transformative life improvement.)
