I identify as an animal welfare supporter who still consumes animal products. I have tried applying to roles that often have a few lines explicitly or implicitly stating the org's stance on veganism. All other aspects of the role and org align with my values. But this central point dissuaded me from continuing the application.
The culture clash would likely impede my ability to establish credibility and trust among my potential co-workers and peers. Not to mention animal products have deep cultural significance to me and my people. It would be disingenuous of me to affiliate with orgs that practice such a doctrinaire approach to animal welfare.
All of that is to say that while I don't think we should ban discussion of veganism, I think we should avoid conflating the practice of veganism with animal welfare advocacy.
