The goals of this post are to:
1. Raise a question I see as crucially important to the goal of aligning AI to animal welfare...
Hello! I'm Justin Portela. I got hired by GWWC to make YouTube videos after AI in Context did such a kickass job.
My channel is using that same cinematic, high-production value beauty to talk about everything in the EA universe that isn't AI.
...
I used AI to fix transcription errors, rerrarange the ideas, and suggest tweaks to the title and some sentences.
Three of the most exciting projects to come out of EA in recent years are, in a vague sense, CEA spinouts:
* Kairos is directly a spinout of CEA and now handles most support for university AI safety groups. Basically everyone I've found who knows them is really excited about what they do
* NEST is an opinionated ideas-fi...
Has anyone thought about donation swaps for tax-deductible giving (a bit like kidney paired donations)? I feel like a good amount of people would be excited about giving to nonprofits that fall outside of the typical options (eg. LEEP or SWP instead of Givewell or THL), but end up defaulting to the latter because that's the only way for them to make tax-deductible donations to EA-aligned charities in their country.
I would be excited about a mechanism allowing me to make tax-deductible donations to a charity of choice for someone in my country, who would in turn do the same to my preferred charity in their country.
Is there something like that already? If not, happy to chat with others who want to explore this further!
There used to be such a system: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/YhPWq784eRDr5999P/announcing-the-ea-donation-swap-system It got shut down 7 months ago (see the comments on that post).
My impression is that most EA oriented charities can already accept tax-advantaged donations from most countries via intermediaries. Is there a particular country/charity combination you are thinking of that is not currently possible?
I think this is true for english-speaking countries, but less so for most european countries. In Switzerland for example, you have direct access to 12 EA-aligned tax-deductible charities through Effektiv-Spenden (6 GH&W, 2 FAW, 4 Climate change).
GWWC on the other hand enables direct tax-deductible donations to 50+ funds & nonprofits across all main cause areas for the US, UK, Australia (& the Netherlands).
