Imagine a "Children of Men" like scenario. Humanity's end appears unavoidable, yet the remaining thousands have managed to extend human lives to centuries. They also have peace and foreseeably will live happy lives for centuries to come, after coming into terms with the pending extinction. 

One day a potential solution to the extinction emerges, however, the odds are greatly against the present day humans. It is only one in a million chance that this solution would work. And worse, if it does not work, all of them will die except the few hundred who can apply to themselves the protection serum before taking the gamble.
