My PhD research is looking at what capabilities people need to understand and reduce existential and catastrophic risks, and whether/how schooling could help build them. I'm interviewing experts across risk domains and am currently short of voices from the AI risk side.
If you work on AI risk - including safety, governance, forecasting, policy, or the field-building around it - I'd value 45-60 minutes of your time.
What's involved
Who I'm looking for
Roughly, two of: a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field; 5+ years working on AI or existential risk; or peer-reviewed publications on the topic.
Why I think this research is important
Part of my argument is that the field's talent bottleneck is partly downstream of schooling. Most people arrive late and through a narrow set of routes - a few universities, self-study, EA itself - which limits the size of the pool. My working view is that if school curricula deliberately built the underlying capabilities (e.g., Xrisk awareness, reasoning about complex systems,) you'd widen the funnel of capable and motivated people. This research is identifying needed capabilities (hence my interviewing risk/safety experts).
