TL;DR: We're hiring a clinical researcher to own the RCT that tests whether our AI-augmented peer therapy model works, and to sign off clinically on every AI feature before it reaches a participant. Rethink Wellbeing
Rethink Wellbeing delivers peer-facilitated group CBT programs supervised by clinical therapists worldwide. Our results are about to be published (JMIR preprint), and our cost-effectiveness is projected to exceed that of the best mental health charities in the field. In our AI+ CBT Project, we are building AI that could cut the cost of effective mental health support by an order of magnitude.
What you'll own
- The Philippines RCT, end-to-end. Design the trial, secure ethics committee approval, pre-register, run it, analyze the results, publish them. This is the study that tests whether our AI-augmented model holds up.
- Clinical sign-off. You are the last line before anything reaches a participant: chatbot prompts, program content, new platform features. If an AI output reads plausibly but is subtly wrong, you're the one who catches it.
- CBT Lab Program/Product ownership: translating organisational objectives into product/platform requirements, backlog prioritisation, and closely collaborating with the developer(s).
- Content & AI refinement. Before and after pilots, you refine the program content and the prompts and knowledge bases behind our AI features (participant chatbot, facilitator coach, screeners), keeping them accurate, clinically sound, and true to the program.
- Engagement & effectiveness research. Run measurement-based care and analyze outcomes across our university pilots and EA cohorts: pre-post wellbeing, mental burden, productivity, attendance, retention, home-practice completion, and AI performance against human ground truth.
- Grant capture. Review R&D funding applications with our executive director and our partners at KIT, translating the program into terms academic and philanthropic funders can back.
What good looks like after 10 months
- The PH RCT is pre-registered, ethically approved, run, and analyzed, with a paper in submission.
- Every AI feature in production has clinically validated prompts, labelled test sets, and defined crisis/safety protocols across jurisdictions (DE/EU, UK, PH, US).
- Pilot and cohort effectiveness data is analyzed and published for both peer-reviewed and community (EA Forum) audiences.
- At least one major R&D grant application is submitted with KIT.
You
- Study design & stats: you've run effectiveness studies before and can match design to question and budget (RCT variants, pilot/feasibility designs), write full protocols, and analyze clustered data, ideally in R or Python.
- Clinical judgment: training in mental health/therapy, ideally CBT and third-wave approaches (ACT, DBT, mindfulness), and in how to deal with people in distress.
- AI/tech evaluation experience: you've evaluated AI or digital tools in mental health contexts (chatbot safety, LLM output rating, digital intervention trials, UX/UI tests) or know the research literature well enough to design such evaluations from scratch.
- Publication track record: you've authored through peer review, ideally in digital mental health.
- Precision without code: you can translate expert clinical judgment into criteria a rater, or an AI, can apply. No coding of AI systems required; analysis skills are.
- Program & project management: you've kept a multi-stakeholder project/program on track (ethics boards, recruitment sites, partners, timelines) and can run one without someone managing you, or owned a (tech or mental health) product.
- Self-directed: comfortable owning a research agenda in a small, fast, remote team. You don't need to tick every box. If you're strong on research and clinical judgment and eager to grow into the rest, apply.
