The Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative (BERI) is a non-profit organization that takes on ethical and legal responsibility for projects deemed to be important for existential risk reduction.

History

BERI was founded in 2017 by Andrew Critch.[1][2]

Activities

Organizations helped by BERI include the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence, the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, and the Future of Humanity Institute.[3]

Funding

As of June 2022, BERI has received over 1.7 million in funding (both for general support and collaborations with other organizations) from Open Philanthropy,[4] and over 1.6 million from the Survival and Flourishing Fund.[5][6][7][8][9]
