I’m happy to share the Animal Welfare Observatory’s 2025 Impact & Accountability Report.

The Animal Welfare Observatory (AWO) is an animal advocacy organization working in Spain and the European Union to reduce the suffering of farmed animals. Its approach combines corporate engagement, public campaigns, and policy advocacy, with a focus on improving conditions for chickens (through cage-free and broiler welfare commitments) and aquatic animals such as fish and shrimp.

2025 was a year of both consolidation and progress for us. We strengthened our governance, welcomed our new General Director, José Luis Murillo, and continued advancing our work across Spain and the European Union. This included pushing for cage-free implementation during a key accountability window, building the analytical foundations to advance broiler commitment compliance in 2026, and further integrating fish welfare into legislative and industry discussions.

We were also selected as a Recommended Charity by Animal Charity Evaluators following a thorough evaluation process, which was both a valuable learning experience and meaningful external validation of our approach and impact .

Looking ahead to 2026, we have started expanding our work on aquatic animals to include shrimp and salmon, given Spain’s position as one of the world’s largest importers and consumers, taking us into new geographies in Latin America and Asia and expanding AWO’s geographic reach.
