My younger brother is currently in high school, and wants to get into the EA movement. Both of us belong to a low-income family with a minority background in a very low-income country, so there's a lot of limitations to the kinds of opportunities we can access. In his case, he's trying to find remote opportunities, or opportunities that may provide some funding in the case of travel, to get involved with the movement, but the opportunity board doesn't seem to have many that fit.

A lot of the work that the both of us have done has been quite hyperlocalized - local policy involvement, working with NGO's, local community projects, etc. In my case, I've been fortunate enough to pursue an entrepreneurial career that is rewarding and high-impact, but trying to help my brother get some exposure. He's a smart kid whose grades got him into the country's equivalent to Eton or the Phillips Academies on scholarship, and he's teaching himself to code.

Any advice on where to look and how to go about this?

Hi Ammar, would love to get your application to the Atlas Fellowship! It's not part of the EA movement but discusses EA-relevant ideas and rationality topics. Applications will likely open in a few weeks. https://www.atlasfellowship.org/

EA-ish/impact-focused programs for high schoolers: LEAF, Non-Trivial

Rationality-focused programs for high schoolers: ESPR, SPARC, WARP.

The GWWC Charity Elections programme (https://givingwhatwecan.org/events/guides/charity-elections) is seeking volunteers to help us reach more schools. Feel free to invite him to reach out to charityelections@givingwhatwecan.org if he is interested. (He would be reimbursed for any international phone calls.)

"A 7-week online fellowship for pre-university students to start an impactful research, policy, or entrepreneurial project." https://www.non-trivial.org/

Application sadly just closed.

...but email them anyway! Worst thing they can do is say no.

In addition to the specific opportunities recommended by other comments, your brother might find Better Trajectories' high school opportunities board helpful: https://www.hsopportunities.com/

It contains some EA and rationality focused opportunities, but also a bunch of other grants, scholarships, camps, etc

If you try the other suggestions, and nothing works, drop me a message! (If you're interested in global mental health / psychology)

Hello! I'm looking for any financial aid opportunities going abroad. Any low hanging fruits?
