With a background in philosophy and policy, particularly at their intersection with contemporary ethical challenges, I am dedicated to building a meaningful career that enables me to create a lasting, positive impact.
Humanity is on the brink of a transformative wave of technological innovation. Our evolution presents challenges, and the decisions we make today, as we traverse the gap between present and future, will shape the lives of generations yet to come. These future generations deserve our moral consideration.
However, many of the challenges we face are neither hypothetical nor distant. It is essential that we give due consideration to the people of the present, as their value is no less than that of those who are yet to be born.
While I remain optimistic about our future, I am aware that such a future can only be realised if we make the right choices now. I am determined to be part of the global collective that will guide us through this pivotal transition.
I am seeking opportunities in the realm of policy work related to effective altruism, with a particular focus on AI governance and catastrophic risk mitigation. My LinkedIn profile outlines my qualifications and experience in these areas. Please feel free to reach out to me via email at ethankielyspencer@outlook.com.
I have skills in writing, logic (various systems) and ethics.
I’m sharing the piece here, though I’ve since noticed a few critical assumptions I left unexamined. I’m currently working on a follow-up that addresses these oversights and explores their implications for the argument. Still, I believe it’s worth sharing this essay as it stands. Partly, it’s a way for me to track my own evolving engagement with this kind of thinking; partly, it’s an effort to be transparent about that evolution. Stay tuned for the rebuttal.
