Hi, and welcome to our global community of aspiring suffering abolitionists! :) Our online meetups serve as a platform to help build a productive and collaborative community for goal-oriented people working towards the abolition of suffering. Please check out our new website to dive into the topic of suffering abolition and find cause areas and initiatives to work on: https://suffering-abolition.github.io/.

Date: 23 July 2022 at 03:00 pm UTC.

To see the date converted to your time zone you may use the following link. (It only works if your browser has access to your location.)

We will meet in EA Gather Town.

Nil and I are using the Suffering Abolitionist hall or the main area frequently for co-working, so feel free to knock us if you need some guidance for navigating the space.

Flexible structure of the working meetup:

1. 10 min helping people navigating in the EA coworking and lounge space on gather.town and introducing the Suffering Abolition hall

2. Moderated introduction round with ~1 min/person

3. Deep dive into 2-3 projects of participants

4. End round with sharing of takeaways ~1 min/person

5. Open end (probably unmoderated)

Approximate time investment: 1.5 h

We encourage the following contributions during the meetups:

Desired focus of the event: ~50% on

1. Updates on participants’ personal suffering abolitionist projects

2. Insights of participant’s research - please always specify how the insights contribute to projects that event participants are actually working on.

Next ~35-40%:

3. Personal story sharing / connecting / fun / wellbeing

4. Discussing personal fit for individuals and potential contributions

Last ~10-15%:

5. Philosophical discussions/ discussions of current media representation and potential responses

6. Research unrelated to specific projects

Excited to talk to you soon!

Only five days left until the next meetup: 23 July 2022 at 03:00 pm UTC.  :D

This is the second time now in EA Gather Town.

The first 10 minutes will be again dedicated to help people enter, navigate and explore the Suffering Abolition hall in EA Gather Town, which I have set up and decorated with lots of care and help from Emrik.

As always, in order for everyone to make the most of the event, please make a commitment to work on a topic of your choice relevant to suffering abolitionism. Our list of initiatives should serve as inspiration. But there is no need to make big commitments. Reading an article is fine too! Note: The more precise you are with what you choose to commit to, the more committed you will feel to actually do it. Even better if you share what you committed yourself to. E.g. as a comment here.

As inspiration for cause areas to work on, check out the following mind maps:

Excited to talk to you soon!

Hello I’m looking forward to coming to this meeting!

Awesome :)

Does a food carbon tax increase animal deaths and/or the total time of suffering of cows, pigs, chickens, and fish? Theoretically, this is possible, as a carbon tax could lead consumers to substitute, for example, beef with chicken. However, this is not per se the case, as animal products are not perfect substitutes.  I'm presenting the results of my master's thesis in Environmental Economics, which I re-worked and published on SSRN as a pre-print. My thesis develops a model of animal product substitution after a carbon tax, slaughter tax, and a meat tax. When I calibrate[1] this model for the U.S., there is a decrease in animal deaths and duration of suffering following a carbon tax. This suggests that a carbon tax can reduce animal suffering. Key points * Some animal products are carbon-intensive, like beef, but causes relatively few animal deaths or total time of suffering because the animals are large. Other animal products, like chicken, causes relatively many animal deaths or total time of suffering because the animals are small, but cause relatively low greenhouse gas emissions. * A carbon tax will make some animal products, like beef, much more expensive. As a result, people may buy more chicken. This would increase animal suffering, assuming that farm animals suffer. However, this is not per se the case. It is also possible that the direct negative effect of a carbon tax on chicken consumption is stronger than the indirect (positive) substitution effect from carbon-intensive products to chicken. * I developed a non-linear market model to predict the consumption of different animal products after a tax, based on own-price and cross-price elasticities. * When calibrated for the United States, this model predicts a decrease in the consumption of all animal products considered (beef, chicken, pork, and farmed fish). Therefore, the modelled carbon tax is actually good for animal welfare, assuming that animals live net-negative lives. * A slaughter tax (a

Tl;DR: Fill out the one-question-form below to let us know if you’d be willing to try out a free Growth & Wellbeing platform for EAs. Share Your Interest in RISE The Gist Over the past few months, we’ve been exploring an idea that’s received a lot of enthusiasm from EA community members, psychologists, coaches, and the community health team: creating a platform tailored to the unique mental health and personal growth challenges faced by EA-affiliated and similar individuals. This project would provide interventions designed by EA-familiar psychologists and coaches, addressing challenges common to EAs, such as impostor syndrome, burnout, perfectionism, anxiety, and more. For example, many EAs have reported feelings of self-doubt or decision paralysis when navigating the complexity of global cause areas or the emotional toll of working on catastrophic risks. These plans can be further customized by users to fit their specific needs and circumstances. Before fully committing, we’d love your input: Would you use a platform like this? Do you see value in having a dedicated tool to support psychological well-being and personal growth in the EA community? Why This Matters * Community Need: Internal surveys and community discussions (for instance: self-care, burnout) have surfaced common well-being challenges within the movement. Many community members report stress, self-doubt, and burnout difficulties. While these are common human struggles, the high-stakes nature of EA work and its unique contexts—like longtermism, existential-risk projects, or navigating uncertainty about career paths—can make them even more pronounced. Improving well-being and personal growth not only enhances individual quality of life but also strengthens the community’s overall effectiveness. * Personalization Gap: Mainstream self-help many times fails because it doesn’t adapt well to the individual’s unique situation. This Project aims to bridge this gap by offering community-tailored prac

This may be the first in a sequence of posts sharing little-known interesting stories from the history of Effective Altruism. In 2021, Effective Altruists played a role in encouraging Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, to liquidate and donate a substantial portion of his meme coin holdings, valued at billions, to high-impact causes such as COVID-19 relief efforts in India. Here's a chronological breakdown of the what worked and the individuals involved. I have no connection to any of the people involved. 🗓️ Late April to Early May 2021 * Background: Vitalik Buterin had been gifted large quantities of meme tokens like SHIB and AKITA, totaling approximately $13 billion at their peak. * These tokens were sent by their creators to Vitalik's public wallet as a publicity stunt, assuming he would never cash them out. 🗓️ May 7-10, 2021 * In an Effective Altruism (EA) Facebook group, Greg Colbourn noticed this massive holding and highlighted the high expected value (EV) of reaching out to Vitalik to suggest donating a portion. * Proposal by Greg Colbourn: > "Looks pretty high EV to Tweet/otherwise contact him suggesting he cashes out ~ a billion dollars for EA causes." * Source Post Discussion Thread: EA Discussion Archive 🗓️ May 10-12, 2021 * Luke Cockerham suggested avoiding public tweets to prevent market participants from anticipating a sell-off. > "Tweeting him would be a poor way to get his attention without alerting other market participants that there might become a huge seller in the marketplace." * Contact Suggestions: * RocketReach Email Profile: Vitalik Buterin Email Contact * Luke noted Vitalik's father was active on Facebook. * Giego Caleiro attempted to reach Vitalik's father. His interpretation was that the message would reach Vitalik indirectly despite his father’s non-committal response. 🗓️ May 12-13, 2021 * Vitalik began liquidating significant portions of his meme coin holdings and donating the proceeds
