I work closely with university students and am constantly asked for career advice, so I've decided to publish some thoughts in a series of blog posts. Here’s the first one.
I work approximately 16 hours a day, every day, by choice, because I love what I do. I would like to share some career advice, particularly for students seeking impactful careers in animal advocacy.
Once upon a time, I worked as a scientist in a pharmaceutical company in Austin. They never accepted interns, not even college students. The reason was that they saw it as a waste of time to spend 3-6 months training someone who would leave as soon as they learned their role.
One day, a high school student showed up with his grandpa. He was dressed in business-casual attire, appeared simple, and showed genuine excitement and natural manner. He convinced his grandpa to drive him there and insisted on talking to the company’s Chief Scientific Officer. He even asked the CSO to let him work for free!
