Effective Altruism is a global community of people who try to use evidence and careful reasoning to do as much good as effectively possible. This matters: Scientific research has shown that some actions can be hundreds of times more effective than their alternatives. Effective altruism provides a framework to try and identify such actions.
As an example, roughly 100K children die of vitamin A deficiency related causes annually, 250-500k become permanently blind. Vitamin A supplements cost about a dollar to produce, making the distribution of these supplements a particularly cost effective way of saving or improving lives.
Actions taken by the EA community such as these have saved 300,000 lives to date. That being said, many outcomes aren't comparable, for example, providing a year of education can't directly be compared to saving a life. There is no single best way to do good. People in EA pursue many different cause areas, such as improving global health, combating poverty, improving animal living conditions, or reducing long-term global risks, such as those posed by climate change, pandemics, or dangerous technologies.
