I have friends/family that may want to donate this holiday season.

My first instinct is GiveWell. But I'm not sure how people would respond to donating to GiveWell since it's different from donating directly to a charity.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to frame this to people, and which charity to pick for recommendation? Whether that is GiveWell or some other effective charity?

it really depends on the type of person!

But this is something like what i do sometimes

  1. Ask them what they care a lot about (health, women's empowerment, education, income, animals)
  2. discuss a couple of high impact charities in their area. the great thing is that now there are high impact charities in as lot of cause areas, not just a few.
  3. talk about some charities being much better than others, helping more people better than less.
  4. discuss whatever questions and concerns someone might be having about the whole thing

things like impact calculators can be good for some people but not for most in my experience.

I don't think generic organizations like GiveWell are the best for most non EA people because they are one step removed from the people they are helping, but it all depends on the person!

Thank you for your good questions! I would probably use the impact calculator by The Life You Can Save, since I use it to introduce people to effective giving: https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/impact-calculator/

The good thing with the impact calculator is that your family / friends can see the impact and compare charities. But it depends on their level of engagement. It might be overwhelming to compare charities. The Life You Can Save also have cause funds, so if they have any cause areas they might like more, you can suggest one of them. Otherwise it might be a good pick to just choose 1-5 of the charities at The Life You Can Save. One thing with that organization is that they only focus on global health, so if you prefer other cause areas GiveWell is better. I hope this helps!

If you’re worried about the idea of GiveWell funds being weird, you could just suggest one of the GiveWell top recommended charities. Or even better, suggest all 4 and let them pick.
