I have recently started working on a highly neglected area of animal welfare: aquatic animals.

Having a background in sustainable development, I was excited to learn about seaweed and it's potential to both help clean our oceans, provide economic development opportunities for coastal communities AND help avoid the farming of millions of sentient animals.

On June 2nd, I will be facilitating a webinar exploring one of the most exciting frontiers (in my mind!) in sustainable aquaculture: seaweed farming.

Seaweed's potential to transform aquaculture

Seaweed farming is emerging as a promising livelihood alternative for coastal communities dependent on fishing, or those exploring aquatic animal farming as a next step. Its benefits span ocean health, climate resilience and habitat creation, making a compelling case for seaweed as a sustainable and ethical path forward.

This session will make the global case for seaweed culture and share an update on the work Ethical Seafood Research is doing on the ground in Tanzania and the wider region, using technological advances to position seaweed as a viable alternative to the farming of sentient beings.

The webinar will also share insight from ESR's newest upcoming report: Building the economic case for coastal seaweed farming over aquatic animal farming.

As ESR’s Head of Development, I'll be facilitating the webinar and will be joined by a fantastic panel:

• Vincent Doumeizel – Senior Advisor, Ocean, UN Global Compact & Founder of the Global Seaweed Coalition

• Ann Ruddy – CEO, Alga Seaweed & Redrose Developments Ltd

• Matt Unerman – Research & Operations Associate, Ethical Seafood Research

Whether you're a researcher, practitioner, advocate or funder, we hope to see you there.

Cheers everyone!
