Intro

I’ve written a book called The High-Impact Professional’s Playbook: How to turn your career, income, and influence into doing good to help professionals have as much impact as they can, whether through a career switch, through their donations, running workplace initiatives, or joining the board of a high-impact organization. The book will officially launch on January 26, 2026 through the publisher Books of Change.

The book combines everything I have learned coaching, mentoring and advising professionals over the past 8 years both through my time co-founding and running High Impact Professionals (HIP), helping professionals make career switches to high-impact organizations, but also my time as a Managing Director at Founders Pledge and most recently as COO and Head of Grantmaking at Ambitious Impact

My aim for the book is to bolster the goals of HIP and thus EA more widely:

  • Act as content marketing for skilled professionals who get interested in the ideas presented, who go on to apply to HIP’s Impact Accelerator Program, sign up with HIP’s Talent Directory, or take a pledge through the HIP Pledge Club.
  • Act as a replacement for those who want to join the Impact Accelerator Program but can’t take part for whatever reason.
  • Act as a standalone resource for professionals who take action on the basis of the book without ever going on to work with HIP.

What the book is

The High-Impact Professional’s Playbook is meant to get professionals over the line and on to having the impact they want to have but don’t know how to attain.

This book is for skilled professionals, whether in consulting, tech, finance, law, entrepreneurship, government or any other field, who genuinely want to do good but lack a clear roadmap. Maybe they are a consultant who is a bit burned out, lacks meaning in their career and wants to work for an NGO but doesn’t know the space at all. Maybe they are in finance and want to donate effectively but don’t know where to start. Maybe they are a programmer at a startup and want to start running initiatives inside their organization but don’t know what is possible or what has worked before. The book sets out to address all major paths to impact for professionals.

Compared to most books in the EA canon, The High-Impact Professional’s Playbook is very practical. A la The Great CEO Within, the book is to the point and differs from other business books as it is fluff free. It contains practical exercises for the reader and also has some inspiring stories of exceptional individuals I’ve had the pleasure of coming across who in my mind exemplify the path to impact they illuminate, many of whom went through High Impact Professionals’ Impact Accelerator Program.  It goes through the different paths to impact professionals can take and provides practical resources for folks to take their next step on that path.

The book does some but not a lot of work to attempt to convince the reader that they should want to have more impact - it assumes they are already at that point and don’t know where to go next. In that sense, I find it to be a good follow on to Moral Ambition in the impact engagement funnel: Moral Ambition gets people inspired to have more impact and The High-Impact Professional’s Playbook shows you how to have it.

How you can help

If you're planning to buy the book for yourself or someone you know:

Pre-order the Kindle version now or buy when the book launches at highimpactprofessionals.org/book. For bonus points, leave a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads on Jan 26th when the book launches.

Pre-orders help build momentum for the launch and purchases on the launch date and demonstrate demand, which matters for media coverage and getting the book in front of professional audiences who've never engaged with EA ideas. The more copies moving in the first weeks, the more visible the book becomes to the professionals we're trying to reach.

As a thank you for those who either pre-order or order in the first week of launch, I will randomly select 15 people who have purchased by Feb 2nd and offer them a 45 minute coaching call with either me or Nina Friedrich, the executive director at HIP - about how to think about their career, their donations, or any other path to impact. If you are interested, submit your proof of purchase here.

If you work at or run an EA organization:

Consider procuring orders for professionals who are in the community of your organization. Here are some ideas about how the book could be useful:

  • If you run an EA city/national group, order some copies for professionals in your context and give them out as you see fit.
  • Event and conferences - if you manage a conference, you can order some copies to have available as a giveaway to professionals who attend.
  • If you run programs that engage professionals, you can give them a copy of the book upon graduation or to targeted individuals who are promising but nonetheless struggling to take the next step. You can of course also refer them to HIP’s programs!
  • If your org has a mailing list, you could post a blurb about the book letting people know it exists. Similarly you can post something on social media about it.

Contact hipbook@highimpactprofessionals.org to discuss bulk purchase (25+) options - if the alignment is right we can likely get you copies close to at-cost.

If you have a professional network:

The biggest impact might come from sharing this with your not-yet-EA colleagues/friends/family. If you have friends in a skilled profession who care about doing good but aren't engaged with EA, this can be a good fit for them. Same too for family and friends who might be interested.

We have a PR team, but if you know anyone who works at a relevant podcast/newspaper/magazine/TV show/etc I’d be excited to chat to them about the book to spread the ideas more widely. Please reach out to us at hipbook@highimpactprofessionals.org or PM me on the forum.
